After 30 years of serving families in Peterborough and the surrounding communities, Lois officially retired on April 30.

Over the years, she has helped generations of families create meaningful memorials.

For many, Lois was the comforting voice on the other end of the phone. Whether helping arrange the lettering of a date of passing or assisting with the design of a new memorial, she approached every conversation with compassion and understanding.

Lois worked alongside Rod Verduyn for the first 20 years of her career, and after his retirement, continued on with Derrick Lennox to help build Kawartha Monuments into what it is today.

What truly set Lois apart was not only her knowledge and experience, but the genuine care she brought to every family she met. She had a way of making people feel heard, supported, and at ease during some of life’s hardest moments.

As she enters this next chapter, Lois is looking forward to spending more time with her husband and grandchildren. While she may be retiring, we know many people will still see her around her church and at Bridgenorth Cemetery.

Lois, thank you for your dedication, your kindness, and the lasting impact you’ve had on so many families over the years.

You will always be a cherished part of the Kawartha Monuments family.

Don’t mind the rain, we had share some of the new pieces we just added to our showroom floor yesterday

Including this new granite our supplier is carrying called Cashmere Pink

Our inventory is always changing especially this time of year as monuments that were sold out of the showroom over the winter have been picked up and taken to our blast shop at Fowlers Corners to start engravings so they can get out to their cemeteries as soon as the ground dries up

Today marks the fist day of spring, though it may not feel like it. Our team is looking forward to the start of a new season

During the winter months, much of our work slows down. Cemetery access is limited, and certain parts of the process — like installations and cemetery inscriptions — have to wait until snow is gone is the ground dries up

We are looking forward to getting back out into the cemeteries across our Peterborough and the Kawartha's, completing monuments that were designed over the winter, and helping families add inscriptions and memorials that couldn’t be finished during the winter months

If you have been thinking about getting a monument for yourself or a loved one, now is a great time to start planning. Our team is here to help, no commitment necessary

There are a few different ways designs can be created in granite, and they each serve a different purpose

Sandblast etching is often used for scenes. A stencil is applied to the stone, and abrasive is blasted through the open areas to remove some of the polished surface. By adjusting the abrasive and pressure, we can create contrast in the polish to make the design visible

This is different from traditional monument engraving, where sandblasting is used to carve much deeper lettering and designs into the stone for names and dates

Impact etching works differently again. Instead of blasting the stone, a diamond-tipped needle taps the surface thousands of times, removing tiny points of polish to form an image. This method is commonly used for photographs or very detailed artwork, because the thousands of small dots allow for much finer detail

Both etching techniques are very superficial, affecting only the surface of the polished granite, while deeper sandblasted engraving is done for different emblems and go deeper into the granite
Each method is chosen based on the type of design and the level of detail needed

if you visit cemeteries across Peterborough County, you’ll notice a symbol that appears again and again

The Celtic Cross

In places like Ennismore, Douro, Otonabee, and the surrounding townships, many families trace their roots back to Irish settlers who arrived here in the 1800s. They cleared land, built farms, churches, and communities — and brought with them traditions and symbols that are still part of the landscape today

The Celtic Cross combines the traditional Christian cross with a circle, often understood to represent eternity and the enduring nature of faith

Over generations, it became one of the most recognizable memorial symbols connected to Irish heritage. If you look closely in local cemeteries, you’ll see it carved into monuments that mark the lives of families who helped shape this region

For many people in Peterborough County, these crosses aren’t just symbols — they’re part of family history

On St. Patrick’s Day, it’s a reminder that the story of this community is still written in the stone markers that stand quietly across our towns and countryside

A columbarium we installed at Curve Lake Cemetery this past fall

With the help of HGH granite and Peterborough Crane Rentals.

It is always a pleasure to work with our local cemeteries and help them serve families in our community.

A columbarium, also reffered to as a Niche, houses urns with cremated remains. This provides families with an alternative option to in ground cremation.
