We asked some members of the Petawawa Defence Team to tell us what Black History Month means to them.

Elsa Lucas, an invaluable member of Petawawa’s Defence Team in her role as Administrative Assistant and Civilian Co-chair of the Defence Visible Minority Advisory Group, had this to say:

My parents are of Caribbean descent and I was born in London, England. Our family along with many others moved to Canada for better opportunities.

Growing up in Winnipeg in the suburbs I was one of three black students in the school, and Black history was not taught. I learned only what society taught me about what it meant to be Black in Canada: you need to work twice as hard to prove you were as good as the next person.

As a young adult I was exposed to more people that looked like me and I had to educate myself on the many contributions that blacks have made to the history and rich tapestry of Canada.

Every year in February we celebrate Black History Month and display the contributions that many have made. I feel a sense of pride as we all get a chance to pause and recognize Black Excellence and showcase how blacks have played an intricate role in shaping Canada into what it is today. I am forever grateful for those that have come before me, and those that walk this journey with me, to make Canada a more inclusive and diverse place for all.
