Today, the Penticton Sikh Temple had the privilege of partnering with a wonderful group “ Mamas for mamas “ from Penticton to deliver essential supplies to families affected by the recent Balde Range fire.

Thanks to the generosity of our local donors and volunteers, essential items continue to be distributed to directly support neighbors who lost their homes.

We are proud to stand shoulder to shoulder with our entire South Okanagan community. As long as our neighbors need help, we will be here.

We are all in this together, and together, we can make a true difference. A heartfelt thank you to all the volunteers and donors making this outreach possible!

We were privileged to welcome Dr. Gurwinder Singh Dhaliwal to the Gurdwara Sahib Penticton Sikh Temple.

Dr. Dhaliwal visited to express his sincere gratitude and appreciation to our congregation and volunteers for their dedication and seva (selfless service) during the recent Summerland Bald Range wildfire emergency response.

During his visit, we also had an enriching discussion regarding the historical context of the Guru Nanak Jahaj.

📖 A Quick Historical Reflection:
Originally known as the SS Komagata Maru, the vessel was chartered in 1914 by Baba Gurdit Singh after performing an Ardaas (prayer) at a Gurdwara in Hong Kong, where it was named Guru Nanak Jahaj in honor of the first Sikh Guru. Carrying 376 British subjects (predominantly Sikhs, along with Muslims and Hindus) seeking a better life in Canada, the ship faced discriminatory immigration policies—specifically the "Continuous Journey" regulation.
Despite arriving in Vancouver's Burrard Inlet, the vast majority of passengers were denied entry and kept aboard for 62 days before being forced to return. Today, the history of the Guru Nanak Jahaj stands as a powerful symbol of resilience, justice, and the ongoing journey toward equality and inclusion in Canadian history.

Moments like these remind us of the strength of our community—rooted in our history of resilience and expressed through our ongoing commitment to seva.

In Canadian, Punjabi, and Sikh community historical contexts, Dr. Gurvinder Singh is a prominent scholar, journalist, and researcher who specializes in Punjabi history, media, and social movements in British Columbia.

Academic Background: He earned his Ph.D. from Punjabi University, Patiala, focusing on 100 years of Punjabi media in Canada (1910–2010).

Research & Community Engagement: He has contributed to historical research projects on early South Asian migration to Canada, Punjabi language advocacy, and key historical events like the Komagata Maru (Guru Nanak Jahaj).
