Today is All Hallows' Eve, which means it's All Saints' Day tomorrow!

It's also the festival of the Reformation in our church, where we remember the "spark" of the movement that became the Reformation. On All Hallows' Eve (October 31), 1517, a young monk name Martin Luther posted 95 statements intended to spark discussion about the practice of indulgences, which were certificates people could buy in order to contribute to their salvation.

Luther condemned this practice as unBiblical and unChristian, which it is, and sought to bring reform so that the true Good News that the Christian Church proclaims would shine through clearly: that all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God, and are justified (declared righteous before God) solely by His grace, through Jesus making atonement for all sin.

We're having a garage sale! Sat Nov 2 from 8am-noon, in our gym.

We're selling items from the church and school that we can no longer use well, but that we know can be used by others. Come and check it out!

Unfortunately, Pr. Michael has lost his voice and is unable to lead music and service as scheduled this morning (June 23).

Bible study is cancelled for this morning.

We will still hold a short devotional service that will be led by one or more of our lay leaders, likely without music or preaching. God will still be present as He brings us His Word, and for that we are still thankful.

If you know of someone who doesn't use email or social media, please give them a quick phone call to let them know of this change of plans for today, especially if it's someone who normally attends Bible study.

As we continue to pray for all those affected by Russia's invasion of Ukraine, there is also opportunity for those who are able to and wish to contribute financially.

LCC Ukraine Aid Fund 🇺🇦 In support of the pastors and people of the Synod of Evangelical Lutheran Churches in Ukraine (SELCU).

-----

Lutheran Church Canada continues calling members to prayer as the crisis in Ukraine persists. LCC congregations and individuals have requested additional information on how they can offer financial support to our missionary and partner Church.

🗣 “With the displacement of thousands of people fleeing the violence that continues to rage throughout Ukraine, relief aid is desperately needed," said President Teuscher. "While general relief aid may be made through Canadian Lutheran World Relief (CLWR) and other such agencies, specific support for the pastors and people of the congregations of the Synod of Evangelical Lutheran Churches in Ukraine (SELCU) may be made to the Ukraine Aid Fund established by Lutheran Church–Canada and which can be accessed through our website."

In an emergency appeal, CLWR stated that "early estimates are that millions [of civilians] could be rapidly displaced, creating a widespread humanitarian crisis." CLWR partners in Ukraine and neighbouring countries are surveying the state of affairs while making preparations to respond to immediate humanitarian needs, providing food, shelter, emergency supplies, and trauma support. Donations to support CLWR partners’ efforts in the region can be made at clwr.org/ukraine or by calling 1-800-661-2597.

Referencing St. Paul's words to the Galatians: ‘As we have opportunity, let us do good to everyone, and especially to those who are of the household of faith’ (📖 Galatians 6:10); President Teuscher added: "LCC has been involved for many years in providing theological education and other support for the congregations of SELCU. As we continue to pray for our brothers and sisters of the household of faith, I also thank the people of Lutheran Church–Canada in advance for your generous gifts in their time of need."

LCC Missionary-at-Large, Rev. Oleksiy Navrotskyy, and his family have moved into the church in Nikolaev for shelter, as it has a basement with thick concrete walls, and the doors have been opened to others looking for a safer location for their families.

Revs. Valera Verba, Sergey Bevz; and Oleg Schewtschenko made the decision to take their families to the Romanian border so that fellow pastor, Rev. Viktor Graefenstein, could take them to Germany for safety. However, the three men themselves are unable to leave the country during this period of martial law, where it has been declared that all male citizens of Ukraine aged 18-60 are restricted from departing Ukraine. Pastor Sergey Bevz has volunteered his service as a chaplain at local hospitals in Dnipro in Eastern Ukraine.

Unfortunately, we are going to need to cancel in-person worship tomorrow (January 9). Pastor Michael has developed some minor cold symptoms, and unfortunately that is enough to make this a necessary decision at this time.

The online service will still happen at 9:30am on our YouTube channel, but we will not be gathering in-person.

In order to ensure that protocols are respected, Pastor Michael will be working from home for the early part of this next week, or until symptoms are clear.

God's peace be with you as we commemorate the Baptism of our Lord in our online format tomorrow.

Things are beginning to get busier around here with Christmas approaching! This week we are doing our annual Toys for Tots breakfast and toy drive. If you are able, you can drop off a new, unwrapped gift for a child in the local area. Ages range from baby to teenager, so there are lots of choices.

In years past, we have enjoyed fellowship of a pancake and sausage breakfast between our school and church community, and unfortunately due to Covid we are unable to join together again, but, we do not let that stop us from collecting!

The kids will be fed pancakes and sausages and we pray that by this time next year, we will all be able to come and have breakfast together again as a school and church community.

Thank you to everyone that is able to help.

We're set to start a study series grounded (literally!) in the places of the Bible. Join in as we deepen our understanding that the events of the Bible involved real people in real places, happening in real history.

No registration needed; just come out at 7pm tonight at the church building. Masks, distancing, and hand hygiene are all recommended for all who attend, as we continue to care for one another in this time.
