In Canada, a doctor can raise medical assistance in dying with a patient before the patient ever brings it up—which is exactly what many jurisdictions prohibit, since patients are primed to defer to a doctor as the expert and may treat the suggestion as a recommendation rather than one option among many.

Only one witness is needed for a written MAiD request—and that witness can be a paid caregiver.

And if a patient is found ineligible for MAiD, there's no limit on how many times they can seek out a new assessor until they find one who says yes.

None of that is true in most of the jurisdictions we compared.

On Saturday, while I was at our CWL diocesan convention, a forest fire raged around our cottage. The 2 cottages on either side are gone. Our cottage (with the green roof) is fine. Pictures are of our statues of Mary, a crucifix, and St. Francis ( I asked him to be our patron saint for the cottage decades ago) that are behind the cottage, the buildings on either side of us, and a pic that shows how close the fire was to the front of the cottage. The whole front forest was burning. The back wasn’t touched, our cottage doesn’t even smell. Please pray for our dear friend Tony, who tried to fight the fire. He was airlifted to Toronto with serious burn injuries.

Why not begin a journey inward to the Immaculate Heart of Mary, to learn from her the secret of the King, her Son--the secret that would change our lives, and with them that of the world, the secret of infinite charity, of God's peace, and Mary's joy--the secret and art of being before God and doing for God?

This is not easy for restless, modern men and women, who have wandered far from the truths and ways of God. Fortunately, we can start by turning to a creature like us, a woman who will lead us along the royal road to God, her Son."
