Official Notification of the Amalgamation of Holy Rosary Parish, Portugal Cove with Holy Trinity Parish, Torbay:
On May 7, 2024, Archbishop Hundt met with members of the Catholic Community of Portugal Cove to discuss the future of Holy Rosary Parish and its possible amalgamation with Holy Trinity Parish in Torbay. At meetings of the Archdiocesan Presbyteral Council (i.e. Council of Priests) on March 13, 2024 and May 16, 2024, the Archbishop also consulted the Council on this matter.
At these meetings, the following reasons for such an amalgamation were presented:
- the number of actively practicing parishioners in Holy Rosary Parish has decreased in recent years to the point where there is only one Sunday Mass and the regular attendance at that Mass has been 80 people or less;
- for many years Holy Rosary Parish has struggled financially, from 2012 to 2019 having operating deficits in seven out of eight years and, at the time of the financial restructuring of the Archdiocese in December 2021, owing the Archdiocese over thirty thousand dollars ($30,000.00);
- the declining number of practicing parishioners, the declining financial support and the rising parish administrative and building maintenance costs makes it increasingly difficult for Holy Rosary Parish to operate as an independent, stand-alone Catholic community,
Having consulted the Presbyteral Council and the Members of the Faithful of Holy Rosary Parish, the Archbishop issued a decree amalgamating Holy Rosary Parish in Portugal Cove with Holy Trinity Parish in Torbay on May 24, 2024.
