The History of Khaled ibn AlWaleed Islamic Centre of Canada
Khaled Ibn AlWaleed Islamic Centre of Canada is a non-profit organization established in 2013 to serve the Muslim community in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada. The inception of Khaled Ibn AlWaleed Islamic Center goes back to the mid 1990's, when several Muslim students used to pray in a small prayer room at Concordia University and used to rent the 7th floor Hall for Friday Prayers. Then, the idea of having a big center for the whole community members in the Alta Vista area located south of the National Capital of Canada was first introduced by Sheikh Mohammed-Sarmad AbdulWahid (Alkhaledi) who moved to Ottawa city in 2005 from Montreal to establish the Quranic Clinic. Later, Imam Mohammed-Sarmad AbdulWahid realized the need for better Islamic activities and social services for the whole city of Ottawa. Muslims are more than 100,000 people in the city and are increasing rapidly including citizens, immigrants, converts and students. As the Muslim community continues to grow, so does the need for a larger prayer area, social center, activities center, school, daycare center, and parking spots.
