There is a powerful and moving story about Kitchissippi United Church in April's Kitchissippi Times. We can't share it here because of Canadian media regulations, but we urge you to look up the PDF version of the paper and read all about it.
Earlier this year, Kitchissippi United in Ottawa celebrated a historical moment when they welcomed 105 new community members to join the United Church of Canada. (Read more about this on our website: https://united-church.ca/news/kitchissippi-united-welcomes-105-new-united-church-members-special-service.)
The Kitchissippi Times story covers how Kitchissippi United and their minister, Rev. Jenni Leslie, came to work with Rev. Daniel Addai Fobi and God's Beloved, a group that welcomes and supports members of the African diaspora who have come to Canada to flee the violence and oppression in their home countries against LGBTQAI+ people, their families, and allies.
The story shares harrowing stories from these new members, many of whom are refugee claimants "who arrived in Canada isolated, traumatized and unsure where they could safely worship."
Rev. Daniel Addai Fobi told Kitchissippi Times, people were looking for a place where they could pray and be loved, but many were still carrying the shame and fear imposed on them in other religious spaces. "So when they come here, 90 per cent of them still have it in them that God doesn't love them."
Rev. Jenni Leslie says, "They've been rejected from every Christian community, both at home and coming here.... To me, that never should happen."
The story of Kitchissippi United and God's Beloved highlights the life-saving importance of inviting and welcoming people to our communities of faith. Opening our doors transforms both our communities of faith and those welcomed in.
