Psalm 58 can be a tough read. Many Christians of different traditions have struggled to understand the seemingly contradictory nature of God as just and God as loving/merciful. But when we view Scripture as a whole, with Jesus at the centre, we can see how Jesus not only doesn't contradict Psalm 58 but actually fulfills it.

When living through a time of ease, when all seems to be going well, we face two primary temptations:
A. Thinking we are entirely in control, or
B. We anxiously wait for things to fall apart

Our challenge, as shown in Psalm 30, is not to focus on the situation around us, but rather on the God who holds all time and circumstances in His hands.

In the time of the Exodus, when God rescued His chosen people from slavery in Egypt, He required the Hebrews to kill a lamb and spread its blood over their doorway. This would set them apart from the Egyptians and protect them from the final plague.

When we look back at this event, called Passover, we can see how Jesus steps in as the perfect Passover lamb, saving us not only from one plague, but for all eternity.

Some of what we read in the Bible can be difficult to reconcile with our experiences. Perhaps you've read Psalm 91 and thought, why doesn't God remove suffering from me? Is it because I lack faith?

Many Christians have wrestled with questions like these. Take heart and be encouraged that you are not alone as you work through the challenges of life.

We pray that David's teaching from Psalm 91 this past Sunday may bring you comfort and that you may experience a deeper grasp of the love God has for you, as shown through Christ Jesus.

When we ask, God may resolve our immediate trouble, but the deeper crisis remains: we are still ultimately mortal. Getting through today's crisis doesn't fix our underlying vulnerability. We don't just need rescue from bad circumstances. We need deliverance from sin and death. And that deliverance can only come through Jesus.

The Lord reveals His character in patterns throughout the Bible and continues to invite us to know him in the same ways today. One such pattern we find is how God lifts those in low places.

"He raises the poor from the dust
and lifts the needy from the ash heap,
to make them sit with princes,
with the princes of his people." (Psalm 113:7-8)

What a wonder it is to know that God not only cares for His creation through words, but also in His actions!
