CNEWA Canada

CNEWA Canada CNEWA has been a lifeline for the poor throughout the Middle East, Northeast Africa, India and Eastern Europe.

Founded in 1926 (and established in Canada in 2003), CNEWA Canada (Catholic Near East Welfare Association) is the Holy Father's special agency for the Eastern Catholic churches. Pope Pius XI founded Catholic Near East Welfare Association in 1926 to support the humanitarian and pastoral work of the Eastern Catholic Churches. Present in Canada since 2005, CNEWA Canada continues its mission today under the guidance of Pope Francis.

Our entire CNEWA agency (and Canadian office) continue to mourn the passing of Carl Hétu, while also celebrating his powerful commitment to our mission and the suffering world around us. Carl's life was one given generously and to so many people both near and far. For that, we are most grateful.

May his soul rest in the great love and mercy of our God.

Carl Hétu, First CNEWA National Director in Canada, Dies at 66

It is with deep sadness that we share the passing of Carl Hétu on May 26. Many of you knew Carl personally or came to know CNEWA Canada through his faithful leadership and witness. As the founding National Director of CNEWA Canada, Carl devoted nearly two decades of his life to building bridges between Canadian donors and the suffering churches and peoples of the Middle East, Northeast Africa, India and Eastern Europe.

Carl was a true fighter – a man of profound faith, humility and courage. He spearheaded CNEWA’s mission in Canada with tireless dedication and gave so much of his life striving to be the Lord’s hands and feet in the world. Through more than 30 mission journeys to places marked by war, poverty and displacement, Carl carried the suffering of others in his heart and worked ceaselessly to bring hope, dignity and peace to those most in need. He often spoke of the extraordinary generosity and compassion of Canadians, and he remained deeply grateful for the prayers and support of our donor family. Thanks to your faithful partnership throughout his years of leadership, countless lives were touched through the work of the Eastern churches and CNEWA’s humanitarian mission.

Carl once reflected that what moved him most was witnessing courage, resilience, sacrifice and strong faith among the people he encountered through CNEWA’s work. Those same qualities defined his own life and service.

At this difficult time, we ask you to please keep Carl and his loved ones in your prayers. We also wish to thank you sincerely for the support, trust and generosity you shared during his years with CNEWA Canada. Your compassion helped sustain a mission that was deeply close to his heart.

May the Lord grant Carl eternal rest and reward him for his faithful and selfless service.

"Leave a Legacy" Month, occurring every May, invites us to think and ask about the values we wish to pass on to the world. Here at CNEWA Canada, we believe one answer is this: leave a legacy of compassion that outlives you.

A gift to CNEWA Canada is truly an enduring act of faith - one that ensures future generations will continue receiving food, shelter, education, medical care and pastoral care in some of the most fragile regions of our world.

Today, that mission feels more urgent than ever.

Your solidarity with those suffering in Lebanon and across the region is was a powerful sign of faith-filled hope for people continuing to endure hardship, displacement and loss.

We were grateful to hear from Joseph Hazboun, CNEWA’s regional director for Pontifical Mission, Jerusalem and Michel Constantin, CNEWA’s regional director in Beirut, Lebanon, for their updates on the devastating realities of displacement and loss in Gaza and southern Lebanon.

Here at CNEWA Canada, we are sharing in the joy of and the one-year anniversary of his election as Supreme Pontiff of the Roman Catholic Church.

We pray that his Papacy will be one of continued reconciliation and hope for our world, as we work for justice and lasting peace.

Today, with the universal Church and all people of goodwill, we mark the first anniversary of the election of Pope Leo XIV.

We assure the Holy Father of our prayers, loyalty and deep respect as he continues to proclaim the Gospel message of Paschal peace to a world in need of hope, healing and reconciliation.

Join us in praying for Pope Leo XIV and his ministry of peace.
