Series: “In the Company of the Prophetic Sunnah”
Love between two people may sometimes reach such a profound degree that one of them feels the other’s pain, suffers from the other’s suffering, and even falls ill with the other’s illness without being aware of it.
It was narrated from An-Nu‘man ibn Bashir (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (PBUH) said:
«“The believers, in their mutual affection, compassion, and mercy, are like one body. When one of its limbs suffers, the rest of the body responds with sleeplessness and fever.”»
Narrated by Al-Bukhari (no. 6011) and Muslim (no. 2586), with slight variations in wording.
Ibn Al-Qayyim (may Allah have mercy on him) said:
«“Some physicians have said: ‘Passionate love is the mingling of one soul with another, owing to the affinity and resemblance between them. When water mixes with water, it becomes impossible to separate one from the other. Likewise, affection between two people may reach such an intensity that one of them suffers when the other suffers and falls ill when the other falls ill, without even realizing it.’»
«It is related that a man was deeply in love with someone who fell ill. His companions came to visit him, and they found him feeling somewhat better. He became cheerful in their company and asked them, ‘Where have you come from?’»
«They replied, ‘From so-and-so. We went to visit him because he was ill.’»
«He asked, ‘Was he ill, then?’»
«They replied, ‘Yes, but he has now recovered.’»
«He said, ‘By Allah, I could not understand this illness of mine, nor did I know of any cause for it, except that I imagined it might have been due to an illness that had afflicted someone I love. Today, I have felt relieved, and I rejoiced, hoping that Allah, Glorified and Exalted be He, had healed him.’»
«He then asked for an inkpot and wrote to the one he loved:»
«‘I was seized by fever, yet I felt not your fever,
Until those who came to me told me of your suffering.
I said: This fever would never have reached me,
Without some cause—unless it were because of your fever.
And from an illness for which I was in no way to blame,
Allah has cured me when He restored you to health.
Thus my soul and your soul became united
In this and that, in one matter and another.’»
«It is also related that a man’s beloved fell ill. The lover went to visit him and, from that very moment, fell ill himself. Then his beloved recovered and came to visit him. When he saw him, he immediately recovered and recited these verses:»
«‘My beloved fell ill, so I went to visit him;
Then I fell ill, out of concern for him.
My beloved came to visit me,
And I was cured the moment I looked upon him.’»
«If you contemplate the world around you carefully, you will hardly find two people who love one another without there being some resemblance or affinity between them, or some degree of agreement in their actions, their circumstances, or their aims. When their aims, qualities, actions, and ways differ fundamentally, nothing remains between their hearts but aversion and estrangement.”»

Ibn Al-Qayyim — qu’Allah lui fasse miséricorde — a dit :
«« Mon bien-aimé tomba malade, et je lui rendis visite ;
Puis mon bien-aimé vint me rendre visite ;
