What a beautiful celebration on Sunday evening.

As members and friends gathered to celebrate the 50th Anniversary of the Oshawa Ontario Stake of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, there was a feeling that went beyond history.

There was gratitude.

Gratitude for those who first helped establish the Church in our communities. Gratitude for faithful leaders who served with love. Gratitude for families who raised children in the gospel. Gratitude for friends who strengthened one another through life's joys and challenges.

As stories were shared and hymns were sung, many hearts were reminded of the countless ways the Lord has blessed His people over the years.

We left feeling connected—not only to our past, but to one another.

Thank you to all who came, shared memories, and helped make the evening so special.

"By this shall all men know that ye are my disciples, if ye have love one to another." — John 13:35

Fifty years ago today!

On June 13, 1976, the Oshawa Ontario Stake of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints was officially organized.

What began with a handful of faithful congregations across Durham Region and surrounding communities became a new Stake of Zion—a place where members could worship, serve, teach, strengthen families, and build faith in Jesus Christ together.

The creation of the Oshawa Stake did not happen overnight. It came after years of missionary work, faithful service, growing congregations, temple trips, chapel building, leadership development, and countless acts of devotion by members throughout the region.

Those early Saints could not have known all that would follow.

Over the next five decades, thousands would be baptized, children would be blessed, youth would be strengthened, missionaries would be called, families would be sealed in the temple, and generations of members would find belonging and purpose within the Oshawa Ontario Stake.

Today we pause to remember with gratitude the faith, sacrifices, and testimonies of those who helped establish this stake fifty years ago.

We also look forward with faith to the future, knowing that the Lord continues to guide His Church and bless His people.

Happy 50th Anniversary, Oshawa Ontario Stake.

"And behold, how great is the goodness of our God." — 2 Nephi 9:10

Youth ages 12–18 are invited to a special Regional Youth Devotional with Elder D. Todd Christofferson of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles and Sister Katherine Christofferson of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

There’s something meaningful about gathering together to hear messages of faith, hope, and discipleship centered on Jesus Christ. We hope this will be an uplifting and memorable evening where youth can feel the love of the Saviour, strengthen one another, and build lasting connections in faith and friendship.

"Modern-day pioneering is still alive."

That phrase appeared in a Church history describing members in Eastern Ontario during the 1960s.

These faithful Saints were not crossing prairies with wagons, but they were building the Church in their own time and place. They sacrificed to attend meetings, shared the gospel with friends and neighbours, served in growing congregations, and worked together to establish places of worship throughout the region.

In the small community of Cobourg, members purchased a small one-room schoolhouse and transformed it into a chapel. Across Ontario, congregations each had their own humble beginnings like this, working side by side to strengthen Branches, build chapels, and prepare the way for future growth.

Their efforts may not have made headlines, but they helped lay the foundation for future Wards, Branches, and Stakes—including the Oshawa Ontario Stake.

As we celebrate 50 years of the Oshawa Ontario Stake, we remember these modern-day pioneers and the quiet faith that helped build Zion in our corner of the Lord's vineyard.

"By small and simple things are great things brought to pass." — Alma 37:6

Did you know?

Before the Oshawa Ontario Stake was organized in 1976, many of the congregations that would eventually become part of the stake belonged to what was known as the Ontario District.

A Church history record from the late 1960s describes the Ontario District as stretching between Oshawa and Kingston and including branches in Belleville, Cobourg, Kingston, Peterborough, and Trenton.

At the time, there were approximately 1,200 Church members throughout the district. The Peterborough Branch alone had about 240 members, making it one of the larger congregations in the area.

As membership continued to grow across Eastern Ontario, local leaders and faithful members worked to strengthen congregations, build chapels, share the gospel, and prepare the way for future stakes of Zion.

Just a few years later, on June 13, 1976, the Oshawa Ontario Stake would be organized—bringing together Saints from across Durham Region and surrounding communities in a new chapter of Church history.

Today, it is remarkable to look back and see how the Lord has blessed and expanded His Church across Eastern Ontario over the decades.

As we approach the 50th anniversary of the Oshawa Ontario Stake, we are grateful for the faith, vision, and devotion of those who helped build the foundations of the Church in our area.

Did you know?

For many years, faithful members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Durham Region traveled great distances to serve in the temple.

Families, youth groups, and Ward members boarded buses, organized carpools, and caravans. Some traveled hundreds of kilometers and spent days on the road to worship in temples far from home.

These journeys required sacrifice—time away from work and school, financial commitment, careful planning, and long hours of travel. Yet they went willingly.

They went to make and keep sacred covenants, to serve their ancestors, and to feel closer to Jesus Christ.

For many members of what is now the Oshawa Ontario Stake, temple trips became treasured experiences that strengthened faith, friendships, and testimonies.

Then came a historic announcement.

On June 22, 1986, President Ezra Taft Benson announced that a temple would be built in the Toronto area.

For Latter-day Saints across Ontario, it was a moment of great joy. The blessings of the temple would soon be much closer to home.

The years that followed brought the groundbreaking on 10 October 1987 with President Thomas S. Monson presiding, construction, and eventual dedication of the Toronto Ontario Temple (located in Brampton) on August 25-27, 1990 —blessings made possible through generations of faith and sacrifice.

As we celebrate 50 years of the Oshawa Ontario Stake, we remember those who traveled far to worship in the temple and those who rejoiced when temple blessings came closer to home.
