Today is the First Sunday in Lent. Reflecting the barrenness of the Lenten desert, flowers and greenery, banners, brass, colour and ornaments are removed or covered. The ringing of bells, Alleluias and the Gloria cease. Somber purple and more solemn music set the season’s tone. The statue of Our Lady is removed and replaced by an “icon” of the Virgin and Child, created from a photo of a refugee mother and her son.
