Thanksgiving, a day set aside by many nations to take time to reflect on that for which we are thankful.
“We give thanks to you, O God; we give thanks, for your name is near. We recount your wondrous deeds.”
Psalm 75:1
A simple enough concept for a simple enough practice, Thanksgiving was established in the 1500s during ship voyages, thanking God for safe passage of crew and cargo. In Canada we celebrate Thanksgiving on the second Sunday of October to coincide with the year’s harvest, giving thanks for the yield God has blessed us with.
But what about the rest of the year?
How soon after Thanksgiving do we pull down our hands of praise and gratitude and stick out our hand of supplication and want? As we seek God for joy, do we do so by asking him for what we want/need or, like Brother David suggests below, do we lean in on the gratitude where joy may be found?
Wouldn’t it be something if instead of a day of thanksgiving we had a day of “asks”? A day to ask God for all we need for the year, and then for the rest of the year we focus on giving thanks. 1 Thessalonians 5:18 instructs us to, “give thanks in all circumstances; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you.” So technically every day should be a day of thanksgiving, right?
Just imagine if we could realign our posture from one of constant asking to one of constant gratitude
- oh, what joy there would be!
Some food for thought to digest while digesting some turkey. 🦃
Happy Thanksgiving all!!
