What do you think about our government? Yes, that’s my question! Is ours a good government? Is it bad? Is it average? In my not so long experience, it seems that we are never happy with our governments, regardless of where we live. But as we reflect on it in our Catechesis Class, there is something much worse than even the worst government. And that is… the absence of governing authority.
A few years ago, in a Bible Class I heard about this eye-witness story. He was a survivor of a N**i concentration camp. When asked what the worst during his time in the camp was, he replied that the worst were three days when N**is had fled the camp and the Soviets hadn’t arrived yet. When there was no governing authority. Just terrifying anarchy and chaos. No government…
Today we have for our meditation this reading from Paul’s letter to Christians in Rome. Great opportunity for us to reflect how we do think, and how we should think about governing authorities as Lutheran Christians. I will argue that we have the highest view on government, and we have the most realistic view on government, and that we have a very dangerous view on government. Let’s explore!

Let's keep going! Episode # 6a. Who am I? How will you answer it? This is one of the most important questions.

Who am I? The simplest of questions but with far reaching ramifications. How we think about who we are, will shape our marital relationships as well. Secular worldview tells that we are not much more than atoms and molecules, chemical elements or lumps of cells. That doesn’t confer much value on us or the others. Similarly with the Eastern ideas, where this reality is only an illusion, and this life doesn’t matter much; why would you care for the other? Biblical understanding of being created in the image and likeness of God … created the Western civilization and bestows infinite value to every human being. How different is our attitude if we treat someone as God’s own representative? Besides this understanding gives us the recipe of happiness, when we understand that we are created to live in two kinds of relationships, receiving the most important things from our God as gifts, and serving others with everything we are and have.

What Jesus says is so unpleasant. “No, Guys, listen! This world cannot be fixed. Better education will not fix it. Better laws will not fix it. Better government will not fix it. Better morals will not fix it. Hear this - even I cannot fix it for you!”
We are beyond fixing. Which means our hope should not be focused on this age and our main efforts not on fixing this world but on the new life-giving Gospel. This is where those Christian communities that haven’t grasped the deadly seriousness of our sin, get really upset, for they want to fix this world. In this age. By their own efforts.
Jesus announces another solution that corresponds to the magnitude of our problem. He will unite us with Him by means of His Holy Spirit indwelling in us. He will be our head, and we will be His body. Wherever the head goes, the body will follow.
Jesus Christ, our head, has already walked through the gates of death and… He has come out alive on the other side. When we look at Him, we know what to expect.

How to build wonderful relationship that will last.

It is wise to recognize our situation, and what enormous difference it makes - what our standing before God is. What is it? Paul contrasts two scenarios for that last day. In one scenario you will stand before the Holy Judge on your own, finally seeing your lives as He sees them, dying of agonizing shame and guilt for what is revealed. In that scenario everything depends on you, on your activities, on purity and holiness of your heart. That is what Paul calls righteousness that is based on the law.

The other scenario is what Paul describes as the righteousness that is based on faith. Perhaps, it may be helpful for us if we used a slightly different language. We could describe the first scenario as where we trust in what we have done. The second scenario is where we trust in what God has done. Our efforts to be good vs God’s own efforts to make us good in His judgment.

Would you like to rely on yourself, when the Last Day comes, or would you rather trust that the Triune God could do a better job in making you good and pleasing to Him with His mighty divine efforts? This is what He offers to you.

What we truly long for, what we are designed and created to have – is to be very special beings, to be significant, to be valued and appreciated, to be accepted and loved, to have meaningful, purposeful and joyful lives, to be at peace and feel secure as we face our uncertain future. This is what we all long for deep, deep in our hearts.
These are not material things. And no created thing, no worldly experience or success, or pleasure can ever fully satisfy our spiritual hunger and thirst. So, we spend our lives chasing them, working for them, paying for them, and especially those, who have achieved much more than most of us ever will, they often recognize what the wise king Solomon has put so well: “Vanity, at the end it is all vanity.”

There are those certainties of life that none of us can escape. And one of them is suffering. When experiences of this life painfully remind us that we are sinful beings living in a fallen world. Whatever your lot is. Health afflictions, relationship problems, material struggles, tragic accidents, betrayal, injustice, loneliness, and so on and on.
To clarify, we are not referring to self-inflicted afflictions which are obvious consequences of our foolish choices and sinful actions. We are referring to those painful situations which seem to come at us out of blue. Brutal, violent, nonsensical, tearing our very lives apart.
Besides, for us, Christians, there is more on top of what everyone faces in their lives. Spiritual hardship. “You will be hated for my name's sake,” thus Jesus. Ongoing battle between old Adam and new creation in Christ in us. The Devil who prowls around seeking to devour us. Crosses that are laid on us because of our Christian faith. Thank you, Lord!
It is in this not so pleasant reality of our lives where the Holy Spirit speaks through Paul the apostle. What He gives us is nothing less than God’s own Survival Kit for His beloved children, where He Himself supplies what is necessary for us to survive and to continue.

How does the Church look in reality? How do we look in reality? It may seem disappointing. And we may be zealous to make her more like the Church should be. Great aspirations! Noble intentions! We should pray that we will succeed, by God’s grace. But no church, no synod, no congregation will ever be perfect in this age. There will always be more to hope for. Always…
But why? Isn’t our Guy in charge? Hasn’t He received all authority? Why don’t you, Jesus, make us into that radiant, harmonious, gracious, beautiful community where everyone lives guided by Your Word and Spirit? Why?!
Why false teachings? Why conflicts? Why tensions? Why clash of personalities? Why tolerance towards sinful behavior? Why lack of grace and forgiveness? Why indifference? Why ignorance? Why misplaced priorities? Why? The answer is quite unpleasant.
