The Week of Prayer for Christian Unity is an annual global ecumenical event where Christians from diverse traditions come together to pray for unity and reflect on Jesus' call for his followers to be one

Today we meditate on the Paschal Mystery—the passion, death, and resurrection of Jesus. This profound mystery unites all Christians in the hope of redemption and the promise of new life.

Through prayer, let us draw closer to the cross, where Christ's sacrifice offers a path to reconciliation and unity among His followers.

Lord our God,
glorifying your Son Jesus, you have freed us from death.
Through his resurrection,
awaken our slumbering hearts,
enlighten all who seek you
and make the morning star shine upon us,
Jesus Christ, the Living One,
who is Lord for ever and ever. AMEN.

Today is the first day in the Week of Prayer for Christian Unity. Around the world, many Christians use this week as a time to pray for their unity and reflect on Jesus’ prayer for his disciples that “they may be one so that the world may believe” (see John 17.21).

In the northern hemisphere, the week of prayer is traditionally celebrated between the feasts of St Peter and St Paul (18-25 January this year). In the southern hemisphere, where January is a vacation time, churches often find other days to celebrate it, for example around Pentecost, which is also a symbolic date for unity.

In this photo, Anglican and Catholic bishops of IARCCUM, take part in an Anglican Choral Evensong in the Choir Chapel of St Peter's Basilica, in Rome. The service was part of an ecumenical pilgrimage in the Week of Prayer for Christian Unity in 2024.
