As we prepare to celebrate the 101st anniversary of The United Church of Canada on June 10, we give thanks for the faith, courage, and vision that have sustained our church through more than a century of ministry.

Reflecting on our past with gratitude, we also look forward with hope, trusting that God continues to lead us into new possibilities.

In a world that is both beautiful and broken, we are called to discern the new things God is doing among us and to embrace a future marked by renewal, compassion, and faithful service to our neighbours and communities.

Union Sunday Prayer

God in whom we live and move and have our being:
From sea to sea to sea we gather in prayer;
from generation to generation we sing;
on this anniversary we give thanks
for your care
guidance
and correction.
In this heritage of trust
we pray for this United Church
and for faithful living on this land,
Our Source of Life, Living Word, and Bonding Love:
Amen.

Please pray for the people of the Philippines, where a magnitude-7.8 earthquake struck off the coast of Mindanao island in the southern part of the country at 7:37 a.m. local time on Monday, causing widespread damage and destruction. The number of those killed or injured is still being determined.

God of justice and compassion,
You call us to be peacemakers in a world that longs for healing.
Be present with those who grieve,
those who live in fear,
and those who continue to struggle for dignity and justice.
Strengthen all who seek truth.
Guide leaders in the ways of accountability and peace.
Move our hearts beyond silence into faithful action.
Help us to work together—across communities and faiths—
in solidarity and hope,
trusting in your vision of a just and peaceful world.
Amen.

The United Church of Canada General Council Executive and the United Methodist Council of Bishops, at separate meetings this spring, each approved an interim covenant that mutually affirms both denominations’ clergy and opens the door to greater cooperation across national borders.

The covenant also declares the leaders’ intention to propose a formal relationship between the two denominations to their top policymaking bodies — the United Methodist General Conference and the Canadian church’s General Council. Both assemblies are next set to meet in 2028.

The denominations’ leaders see the interim agreement as a crucial step toward full communion between the two denominations.

“I think that it’s a critical step forward in building the relationship with The UMC,” said United Church General Secretary Michael Blair. “But also, I think one of the payoffs will be how we support migrant Methodist communities here in Canada.”
