BACKSLIDING VS APOSTASY
Today’s service taught us the important difference between backsliding and apostasy. We learned that backsliding is when a believer grows weak, drifts away, or falls into sin, but it is not a deliberate rejection of God. A backslider may struggle spiritually, become lukewarm, or lose passion for prayer and obedience, yet there is still conviction and an opportunity for repentance and restoration through the mercy of God. The Bible shows us that God lovingly calls back the backslider, saying, “Return, ye backsliding children, and I will heal your backslidings” (Jeremiah 3:22). We also see in Psalm 51 how David fell into sin but repented and was restored by God. Apostasy, however, is different because it is willful. Apostasy is the conscious rejection of the truth after fully knowing it. It is turning away from Christ intentionally, hardening the heart against God, and denying the faith. Hebrews 10:26 warns, “For if we sin wilfully after that we have received the knowledge of the truth, there remaineth no more sacrifice for sins.” We learned that while a backslider can still be drawn back by conviction and repentance, an apostate deliberately resists and rejects God’s truth. This message reminded us to guard our hearts, remain rooted in God’s Word, and stay spiritually watchful in these last days so that we do not slowly drift away from the presence and truth of God (Hebrews 3:12-13, Matthew 24:13).
