🔴 Don't forget to fast tomorrow and the day after tomorrow — the sins of the previous year will be erased in-sha'Allah!
If you are unable to fast for two days, then fast only the day after tomorrow (Thursday).
It is narrated from Abu Qatadah (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Prophet ﷺ was asked about fasting on the Day of Ashura, and he said:
صِيَامُ يَوْمِ عَاشُورَاءَ أَحْتَسِبُ عَلَى اللَّهِ أَنْ يُكَفِّرَ السَّنَةَ الَّتِي قَبْلَهُ
"Fasting the Day of Ashura, I hope from Allah, expiates the sins of the previous year."
(Reported by Muslim)
It is narrated from Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) that when the Prophet ﷺ came to Madinah, he saw the Jews fasting on the Day of Ashura. He asked them:
"What is this day that you are fasting?"
They replied:
"This is a great day. On this day Allah saved Musa (Moses) and his people, and drowned Pharaoh and his people. Musa fasted this day in gratitude, so we also fast it.
The Prophet ﷺ said:
"We have more right to Musa and are closer to him than you."
So the Prophet ﷺ fasted that day and commanded that it be fasted.
(Reported by al-Bukhari and Muslim)
💡 Practical Advice (Fasting the 9th Day)
To distinguish the Muslim practice from that of the Jews, the Prophet ﷺ instructed that a day be fasted along with Ashura. He said:
"If I live until next year, I will surely fast the ninth day as well (together with the tenth)."
(Reported by Muslim)
Therefore, according to the Sunnah, it is preferable to fast the 9th and 10th of Muharram (or the 10th and 11th), although if one fasts only the 10th day (Ashura), the fast is still valid and accepted.
