Poland is preparing to inaugurate Europe’s largest statue of the Blessed Virgin Mary on August 15, the Solemnity of the Assumption, in what is expected to become one of the continent’s most significant Marian pilgrimage sites.

Rising to an impressive 55.6 meters (182 feet), the monument is being erected in the village of Konotopie, near the city of Toruń. The statue itself measures 40.6 meters, standing atop a 15-metre crown-shaped pedestal that symbolizes Mary’s title as Queen of Heaven. An observation deck inside the pedestal will offer panoramic views of the surrounding countryside.

The ambitious project has been fully funded by Polish businessman Roman Karkosik and his wife Grażyna, both natives of the region, who envision the shrine as a lasting place of prayer, evangelization, and Marian devotion for generations to come.

Located beside an existing Marian shrine, the monument is already drawing the attention of pilgrims and visitors even before its official inauguration. Built using approximately 2,500 cubic meters of concrete, it will surpass every Marian monument in Europe, including the renowned Virgin Mary statue at Miribel in France, and will also stand taller than Poland’s iconic Christ the King statue in Świebodzin.

The August 15 inauguration is expected to attract thousands of faithful from across Poland and beyond, transforming Konotopie into a major destination for Marian pilgrimage. For Catholics, the unveiling on the Feast of the Assumption carries profound spiritual significance, celebrating Mary's glorious assumption into heaven while honoring her enduring role as Mother of the Church and Queen of Peace.

Sts Nazarius And Celsus

Feast Day: July 28

St. Nazarius and St. Celsus (1st c.) were early Christian martyrs, but nothing else is known with certainty about their lives or the time they lived, other than that they were put to death for their Christian faith in Milan, Italy, perhaps during the persecution of the Emperor Nero. What we know about these saints came to us from St. Ambrose, Bishop of Milan. In 395 A.D. St. Ambrose discovered the body of St. Nazarius, with severed head, along with a vial of his blood still as fresh as the day it was spilled, in a garden outside the city gates. St. Ambrose carried the body in procession to bury in the city's Basilica of the Apostles. In the same garden he also discovered the body of St. Celsus, and likewise had the body taken to the same basilica. Miracles occurred in the church at the presence of the relics of these two holy martyrs. According to one account, St. Nazarius was the son of St. Perpetua, the child she bore just prior being executed for her faith. Celsus was a youth given to the care of St. Nazarius by the boy's mother, who desired for the saint to teach her son the Christian faith. The two traveled and preached the Gospel together zealously before being tortured and executed in Milan. They share a feast day on July 28th.

Virgin Mary, this morning I place my family before you.

Enter our home with your motherly presence and bring to Jesus everything each one of us needs.

Guard our paths and deliver us from the dangers we can see, as well as those we cannot perceive.

Mary, bring peace into our home.

Do not allow small irritations to become deep wounds. Give us patience to talk, humility to ask for forgiveness, and wisdom not to speak words that may later bring regret.

Strengthen marriages, bring parents and children closer together, comfort those who miss someone, and help us value one another’s presence more deeply.

Look with tenderness upon the sick members of our family.

Ask Jesus to grant them relief, strength, and trust. Sustain those who care for them every day and are beginning to feel the weight of weariness.

May our home never lack what is necessary, but may we also never lack gratitude, honesty, and the willingness to share.

Virgin Mary, protect our little ones, guide our young people, and support our elderly.

Keep away harmful influences, impulsive decisions, dangerous paths, and everything that could lead our family away from God.

When one of us feels discouraged, help that person find support at home. When someone is happy, teach us to celebrate together. When difficulties arise, do not let us face them divided.

Mary, present to Jesus the names I now remember in silence.

You know the worries, plans, needs, and struggles of every member of my family.

This morning, place your hand over our home and help us go through this day with unity, protection, and faith.

May we come together again in peace this evening, thanking God for another day lived under His care.

Virgin Mary, remain with my family today and always, and lead each one of us closer to Jesus.

"Brothers and sisters: The Spirit comes to the aid of our weakness; for we do not know how to pray as we ought, but the Spirit himself intercedes with inexpressible groanings." Romans 8:26

In the second reading today, Paul tells the Romans that the Spirit comes to our aid in our weaknesses. Blessed Solanus knew that even our weaknesses were an opportunity for encounter with the Holy Spirit and that those weaknesses kept us from pride in the spiritual life. He did not despise weaknesses as a failing, but viewed them as a gift that allowed us to grow in holiness. Let us ask for Blessed Solanus' intercession to view our weaknesses with the understanding that they are gifts.
