O Holy Cross of Jesus, be my true light.
O Holy Cross, fill my soul with good thoughts.

which leads to salvation,
may the Holy Cross always be my protection.

R. Amen.
Sweet the wood, sweet the nails,
sweet the Burden which thou bearest,
for thou alone, O Holy Cross,
wast worthy to bear the King and Lord of Heaven.
R. Amen.
This litany dates from the Middle Ages and from many countries; while the refrain refers to the Holy Cross, it is considered that in doing so, we are actually referring to our Savior Who hung upon it and thereby redeemed us all. By our salutation to the chief instrument of Our Lord's Passion and death, we trust in hope that He will show mercy to us.

Prayers and Meditations
Opening Prayer
O most blessed Virgin, Queen of Martyrs, you stood generously beneath the cross and felt the sword of sorrow pierce your soul. Look now with a mother’s understanding and tenderness, as I kneel before you to commemorate your sorrows, and to present my petition to you with childlike confidence. I beg of you, O Mother, to plead for me with your Son, so to touch his Sacred Heart, that I may obtain my request… (pause to make your request)… For to whom shall I turn in my time of need, if not to you, O Mother of Mercy, who having so deeply drunk the chalice of your Son, can surely tell Him of my needs. Amen.
Act of Contrition
O Mother of Sorrows, how ungrateful have I been in the past to my loving God. Now, I repent, humbly asking pardon for the offence done to God in His infinite goodness, and I resolve by the help of His grace to offend Him no more. Obtain for me that I may live and die in the love of my Lord and share eternally in that glory which He has won for me through His death and resurrection. Amen.
Our Father
Our Father, Who art in heaven, Hallowed be Thy Name. Thy Kingdom come. Thy Will be done, on earth as it is in Heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us.
And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. Amen.
Hail Mary
Hail Mary, full of Grace, the Lord is with thee; Blessed art thou among women, and blessed is the fruit of thy womb, Jesus. Holy Mary, Mother of God, pray for us sinners, now and at the hour of our death. Amen.
Closing Prayer
O God, you willed that the life of the Blessed Virgin be marked by the mystery of suffering. Grant that we journey with Her on the way of faith and unite our sufferings to the passion of Christ so that they become occasions of grace and the promise of future resurrection. We ask this through Christ our Lord. Amen.

Blessed Virgin Mary, Our lady of Compassion, I turn to you with filial confidence. You shared fully in the work of our lord Jesus Christ, whose Death brought life to the world. Help me now to understand the truth about the divine compassion. Teach me to accept the sufferings that come into my life as you accepted obediently your own deep sorrows. Loving Mother of the Redeemer, you consecrated yourself by submitting to the divine plan. Obtain for me the grace to make my own submission to the same wise providence, now and at the hour of my death. Amen.
Prayers to Our Lady of Sorrows
Consecration to Our Sorrowful Mother
Holy Mary, Mother of God and Queen of Martyrs, I do this day choose you as my model, protectress, and advocate. Receive me as your special servant, as a partaker in your sufferings. Give me strength always to remain close to Jesus your Son who died on the cross for me. Accept every good work that I may perform and offer it to your Son for me. Dear Mother, stand by me in all my actions, that they may be directed to the glory of God. Amen.
Prayer for a Perfect Contrition
O Most Sorrowful Mother, you truly became the Queen of all martyrs as these seven bitter swords of sorrow pierced your Immaculate Heart! By the merits of your tearful distress obtain for us and for all sinners the graces of perfect contrition and conversion.
Help us always, dear Mother, to imitate you by taking up our crosses and following Jesus with limitless love and generosity.
Amen.
Prayer to Our Lady Queen of Martyrs
Mary, most holy Virgin and Queen of Martyrs, accept the sincere homage of my filial affection.
Into thy heart, pierced by so many swords, do thou welcome my poor soul.
Receive it as the companion of thy sorrows at the foot of the Cross, on which Jesus died for the redemption of the world.
With thee, O sorrowful Virgin, I will gladly suffer all the trials, contradictions, and infirmities which it shall please our Lord to send me.
I offer them all to thee in memory of thy sorrows, so that every thought of my mind, and every beat of my heart may be an act of compassion and of love for thee.
And do thou, sweet Mother, have pity on me, reconcile me to thy divine Son Jesus, keep me in His grace, and assist me in my last agony, so that I may be able to meet thee in heaven and sing thy glories. Amen.
Prayer of Repentance to Our Sorrowful Mother
O Mother of Sorrows, by the anguish and love with which thou didst stand at the Cross of Jesus, stand by me in my last agony. To thy maternal heart I commend the last three hours of my life. Offer to the Eternal Father in union with the agony of our dearest Lord in atonement for my sins. Offer to the Eternal Father the most Precious Blood of Jesus, mingled with your tears in Calvary, that I may obtain the grace of receiving Holy Communion with the most perfect love and contrition before my death, and that I may breath forth my soul in the adorable presence of Jesus. Dearest Mother, when the moment of my death has at length come, present me as your child to Jesus. Ask Him to forgive me for having offended Him for I know not what I did. Beg Him to receive me into His Kingdom of glory to be united with Him forever. Most Sorrowful Mother, pray for us. Amen.
Prayer of Humility to Our Lady of Sorrows
Most holy Virgin and Queen of Martyrs, Mary, would that I could be in Heaven, there to contemplate the honors rendered to thee by the Most Holy Trinity and by the whole Heavenly Court! But since I am still a pilgrim in this vale of tears, receive from me, thy unworthy servant and a poor sinner, the most sincere homage and the most perfect act of vassalage a human creature can offer thee.
In thy Immaculate Heart, pierced with so many swords of sorrow, I place today my poor soul forever; receive me as a partaker in thy Dolors,
and never suffer that I should depart from that Cross on which thy only begotten Son expired for me.
With thee, O Mary, I will endure all the sufferings, contradictions, infirmities, with which it will please thy Divine Son to visit me in this life. All of them I offer to thee, in memory of the Dolors which thou didst suffer during thy life, that every thought of my mind, every beating of my heart may henceforward be an act of compassion to thy Sorrows, and of complacency for the glory thou now enjoys in Heaven. Since then, O Dear Mother, I now compassionate thy Dolors, and rejoice in seeing thee glorified, do thou also have compassion on me, and reconcile me to thy Son Jesus, that I may become thy true and loyal child; come on my last day and assist me in my last agony, even as thou were present at the Agony of thy Divine Son Jesus, that from this painful exile I may go to Heaven, there to be made partaker of thy glory.
Most Sorrowful Mother, pray for us. Amen.
Prayer of Saint Alphonsus Liguori
O afflicted Virgin, O soul great in virtues, as in sorrows, both the one and the other spring from that fire burning in thy heart for God, the only love of thy heart! Mother, have pity on me, who has not loved God, and who has so greatly offended Him. Thy sorrows, it is true, assure me of pardon, but that’s not sufficient. I wish to love God. Who could obtain for me the grace if not thee, who are the Mother of the holy love? O Mary, Thou consolest everyone; favor me also, with thy consolations. Amen.
Most Sorrowful Mother, Pray for us!
O sorrowful Virgin, unite me at least to the humiliations and wounds of thy Son, so that both He and Thee may find comfort in having someone sharing thy sufferings. Oh, how happy I would be if I could do this. For is there perhaps anything greater, sweeter, or more advantageous for a person? Why dost thou not grant me what I ask? If I have offended thee, be just and pierce my heart. If I have been faithful to thee, leave not without a reward: give me thy sorrows. Amen.
Saint Bonaventure
May the Virgin of Sorrows obtain for us from Her Son the grace to make us pe*****te ever more deeply into this mystery and to inebriate us with the sufferings of Jesus.
May the Blessed Virgin obtain for us the grace to love the cross, suffering and sorrow! Amen.
Saint Padre Pio
Grant, we beseech Thee, O Lord Jesus Christ, that the most blessed Virgin Mary, thy Mother, may intercede for us before the throne of thy mercy, now and at the hour of our death, whose most holy soul was transfixed with the sword of sorrow in the hour of thine own Passion. Through Thee, Jesus Christ, Savior of the world, who lives and reigns with the Father and the Holy Spirit, forever and ever. Amen.
O Lord, Jesus Christ, may the Blessed Virgin Mary, your Mother, whose soul was pierced by a sword of sorrow at your passion, implore your mercy. Amen. .
It is says that Our Lord suffered on His body during His passion and death on the cross, for the redemption of our sins, the Blessed Virgin Mary suffered on Her soul. She is called Co-Redemptrix.
Queen of Martyrs, your heart suffered so much. I beg you, by the merits of the tears you shed in these terrible and sorrowful times, to obtain for me and all the sinners of the world, the grace of complete sincerity and repentance. Amen.
Virgin most afflicted, how ungrateful have I been in the past to my God, in return for all His benefits. Now, I repent in bitterness of heart, humbly asking pardon for the offence done to His infinite goodness, and resolved by the help of heavenly grace to offend Him no more. Ah! by all the pains which thou didst suffer in the cruel Passion of thy dear Jesus, I pray thee, with fervent sighs, to obtain for me pardon and mercy for all my grievous sins. Receive this holy exercise wherein I am going to engage in memory of thy Sorrows. Obtain that the same sword which pierced thy soul may pierce mine also, that I may live and die in the love of my Lord, and share eternally in that glory, which He has purchased for me with His most precious blood.
Amen.
May Our Lord Jesus Christ be with us that He may defend us: be within us that He may preserve us; precede us that He may guide us; follow us that He may guard us; be over us that He may bless us: for He lives and reigns with the Father and the Holy Spirit forever and ever. Amen.
t the cross her station keeping
Stood the mournful Mother weeping
Close to Jesus at the last.
Through her heart, his sorrow sharing,
All his bitter anguish bearing,
Now at length the sword has passed.
Oh, how sad and sore distressed,
Was that Mother highly blessed
Of the sole begotten One!
Christ above in torment hangs,
She beneath beholds the pangs,
Of her dying glorious Son.
Is there one who would not weep,
Overwhelmed in grief so deep
Christ’s dear mother to behold.
Can the human heart refrain
From partaking in her pain,
In that Mother’s pain untold?
Bruised, derided, cursed defiled,
She beheld her tender child
All with bloody scourges rent.
For the sins of his own nation,
There he hung in desolation
Till his spirit forth he sent.
O thou Mother: fount of love!
Touch my spirit from above,
Make my heart with yours accord.
Loving Mother, pierce me through;
In my heart each wound renew
Of my Savior crucified.
Make me feel as you have felt,
Make my heart to glow and melt
With the love of Christ my Lord
Let me share with thee His pain,
who for all our sins was slain,
who for me in torments died.
Let me mingle tears with you
Mourning him who mourned for me.
All the days that I may live.
By the Cross with thee to stay,
there with thee to weep and pray,
is all I ask of thee to give.
Virgin of all virgins blest!,
Listen to my fond request:
let me share thy grief divine;
Let me, to my latest breath,
in my body bear the death
of that dying Son of thine.
Wounded with His every wound,
steep my soul till it hath swooned,
in His very Blood away;
Be to me, O Virgin, nigh,
lest in flames I burn and die,
in His awful Judgment Day.
Christ, when you shall call me hence,
Be your Mother my defense
Be your cross my victory.
While my body here decays,
May my soul your goodness praise,
Safe in heaven eternally.
