What an honour to walk with my people on this day of truth and reconciliation! It was both painful and beautiful. Beautiful to see every generation walking in solidarity to honour lives lost in schools designed to ‘kill the Indian in the child’ and a system build on ‘getting rid of the Indian problem’. Hearing our languages spoken and redeemed, seeing survivors come full circle to celebrate thier dance, music, language and way of communal celebration!
It was painful also because of the surge of denialism and callous comments designed to continue to destroy this pride. Painful to see the lack of listening and understanding. Both still exist in strong numbers. It is our responsibility to lead in healing for both sides, because there are still ‘sides’. As uncomfortable as that is, it is our reality as a nation. There are people on both sides who have committed thier lives to working on healing and reconciling and often we can get impatient that the collective whole is not where we would like them to be. But I would implore us all to remember everyone is on their individual healing journey and we need to hold space of listening, compassion and grace for that.
This is about indigenous people grieving and healing and for our allies to listen and find their role and responsibility to heal themselves as well. It is on both sides where elders need to gently walk their own people in healing, which is questioning our responses, our resistance and our adherence to beliefs of what we think is true. Some truths are just plain uncomfortable and painful. We cannot deny that for risk of losing our moment of awakening. Walk in peace, quietness, and reconciliation, but above all walk in truth, as Creator intended and calls us to.

NATIONAL DAY FOR TRUTH & RECONCILIATION

Today we stand with the Indigenous, Metis and Inuit peoples of Turtle Island. We stand with them in their pain, their mourning, their grief. We stand with them as fellow survivors, indigenous people and allies.
We acknowledge and believe their stories as we share many of the same scars. I’m

Today encapsulates what founded Rising Above Healing ministries over 30 years ago. A group of residential school survivors got together to address the devastating pain and loss they suffered through abuse in these schools designed to ‘destroy the Indian in the child’.

What is amazing to me is that despite the word of God being used to destroy a people group, their way of life, culture and identity, there are thousands who have found the real Creator and walk in rich faith as Christian indigenous people! If that isn’t recilience I don’t know what is!

Today, we remember, we honour, we bless…

If you are unsure of how to support Indigenous, Métis Inuit peoples please reach out and we would love to have a conversation with you! Today is about listening and learning, both ways. Take time to attend an event, read a book, watch documentaries online, there are thousands of resources at your finger tips! Pray with us as today highlights what we do year round, bringing hope to First Peoples of Turtle Island!

Be strengthened in your faith and may you find hope in your pain…

Boozhoo, Aaniin!

As Christians, indigenous and non indigenous, we have the opportunity to be the example of what reconciliation is all about. Listening, sharing, forgiving and above all, sharing the heartbeat of God, which is love.
Love instead of hate, listen instead of talking over each other, pray instead of speculating.

We at Rising Above stand with our fellow indigenous people and pray for healing and thriving for our people. We pray for our non indigenous believers. That you would find your place and voice amidst reconciliation.
We are commanded to mourn with those who mourn, not interject opinion and timelines of healing to a pain we do not understand. I emplore all to stand with, participate in any and every way you can. If it is a challenging difficult time for you during this season of Orange Shirt day, can I ask you to consider giving to those who have dedicated thier lives to the message of the cross? It is not just a one day a year issue, there are lives on both sides in desperate need of hope, of truth, of reconciliation.
Giving to Rising Above allows us to continue to bring the gospel message of hope to our people through discipleship, addictions and grief recovery, conferences and seminars from indigenous believers and allies. We desire to bring this message to all of Turtle Island and see God bring healing!
We would love to come to your church, school, even workplaces to share!

Check out our website for giving options and what we do!

I was honoured to sit with this great indigenous man of faith and share our stories of finding peace and celebration in who we are!
As we approach TRC and Oranfe shirt day, my heart is that all our people would stand in freedom, purpose and fullness of who we are! We are worthy, we are loved, we matter! We matter most to our Creator and I love Him for that! You can celebrate, you can grieve, you can do both!
God makes no mistakes, but man has mistakenly placed shame on others where it was never meant to be.
To all our people across this beautiful land, continue to heal, to take up your space! Aho!
