In Ontario, the August long weekend (typically known as "Civic Holiday") is Simcoe Day, in honor of John Graves Simcoe who was the first Lieutenant Governor of Upper Canada (1791-1776). He is remembered for passing Simcoe's legislation, the 1793 Act to Limit Slavery in Upper Canada, which was the first legislation in British colonies to restrict the slave trade and abolish slavery in Upper Canada.

Take a moment today to reflect on Canada's history of slavery and how Catholics from around the world continue to fight against slavery in our modern times.
