"Parishioners of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church of Saints Peter and Paul are trying to block the Ukrainian Orthodox Church of Canada (UOCC) from taking possession of the church...The church was purchased by the congregation in 1985."

A congregation’s fight to keep its church went to the Supreme Court of British Columbia in New Westminster last week.

"Most of us have grown up in churches that are both Orthodox and Ukrainian. Our religion and ethnicity are one. Our communities revolve around this fact...The people in New Westminster, BC, who are suing the UOCC for the return of the deed to their church, looked for a solution -- they had only two choices, it was either join the Kyivan Patriarchate as a member church or shut its doors and have the Consistory assume title and sell their property. They chose to join the KP rather than be without a church. Ask yourself the question -- what would you do if you were told you had to close down your church and that the Consistory would sell the land and keep the proceeds? Would you fight to save it?"

Many in the Ukrainian community are aware of what is happening in the Ukrainian Orthodox Church of Canada (UOCC) and many are not. More specifically, there is a serious division amongst the faithful as to the future direction of our church.

Statement by the Prime Minister of Canada marking the celebration of Christmas by Orthodox Christians and Eastern Catholics

Ottawa, January 6, 2013 — Prime Minister Stephen Harper issued the following statement today on the celebration of Christmas by Orthodox Christians and Eastern Catholics:

"Laureen and I would like to wish Orthodox Christians and Eastern Catholics in Canada and around the world a peaceful and joyous Christmas.

"Christmas is a time of peace and unity, and a time to gather with friends and family to celebrate the Nativity of Jesus Christ.

"During this special time of year, we recognize the tremendous contributions that Orthodox Christians and Catholics of the varied Eastern rites make to our country and we reaffirm Canada's commitment to support people of all faiths, and to promote religious freedom around the world.

"To celebrate Canada's cultural and religious diversity, the Christmas lights along Confederation Boulevard, including Parliament Hill, will stay lit until January 7 to mark all Christmas celebrations.

"On behalf of the Government of Canada, I wish you and your family a happy and blessed Christmas."
