Famous (?) Last Words
Sunday, June 7 (10:30 am)
Guest Speaker: Mary Bennett

In February this year a design professor, aged 94, designed a postcard to be sent out after his death to friends and past students. It said simply: If you’re receiving this, I’m dead and I really liked you. Apple Computer founder Steve Jobs’ last words were, “Oh Wow! Oh Wow! Oh Wow!” Reportedly Charles Darwin rejected his theories of evolution in favour of traditional Christianity on his deathbed, but no one who was there confirmed this.

In an effort to “control the narrative”, technology allows many ways to ensure we don’t get misquoted or accidentally miss the chance to leave our loved ones with the message we’d like to share. We’ll invite you to consider, perhaps even plan, your own final message.

Marking Sacred Moments
Sunday, May 10 (10:30 am)
Beacon Lay Chaplains: Laura Redmond and Janet Pivnick

Lay Chaplains offer rites of passage to mark the sacred moments in the lives of the community. In this service, Beacon’s Lay Chaplains will talk about the importance of these moments and share some of their processes and considerations when they design and officiate at a rite of passage.

The service will also include a rite of passage—the installation of Beacon’s newest lay chaplain, Laura Redmond.

Unitarians Face a New Age
Sunday, May 3 (10:30 am)
Rev. Shawn Gauthier

In the 1930s, our spiritual forebears bravely asked “whether the organised religious movement known as Unitarianism has any real function to perform in the modern world”. Come and hear their bold response, and Rev. Shawn Gauthier’s equally powerful invitations to us all. This sermon was offered in October 2025 at the installation of Rev. Danie Webber in Hamilton. This version was recorded in November 2025 at VanU.

Trees: Paragons of Community; Sacred Across Cultures
Sunday, April 12 (10:30 am)
Presented by Susan Millar and the Beacon Homily Club

Join us for a thoughtful and inspiring service led by Susan Millar and members of the Homily Club. Across many traditions, trees are revered as symbols of strength, connection, and sacred presence.

In this service, we’ll explore how trees not only hold spiritual meaning in cultures around the world, but also offer powerful lessons about cooperation, resilience, and community. Come reflect with us on what the quiet wisdom of trees might teach us about living well together.

Earth Blessings
Sunday, April 5 (10:30 am)
Rev. Fiona Heath (video) - Meaning Making Series

As Canadian UUs, our interdependence calls us to love and justice—to make life better not just for people but for the planet as well. The earth gives us so many gifts—from soaring eagles to fresh water to life itself—how can we give back and help nature flourish even as the climate changes?

Fiona speaks to us by video in this year’s Meaning Making series, “Meeting this moment with love and justice.”
