A notice to the ladies of Calvin and New Waterford

Hi Folks
Last Sunday was the first Sunday for our new minister, Rev Jim MacNaughton or “Rev Jim” or as he prefers “Jim”. This was the start of a new chapter in the life of Calvin United Church, 16 months after the passing of Duncan.
There was an excellent crowd on hand for Jim’s first service, even in spite of it being on the long holiday weekend in August. It was encouraging to see so many in the pews. There were several people from the community in the crowd, including some from St Leonard’s parish Calvin has always been a leader in the ecumenism movement in New Waterford and Rev Jim has great experience in promoting ecumenism in his past pastoral settings. He has already met some clergy from other denominations and plans to meet all the clergy serving the New Waterford area in the coming week or so. Jim has been about town and meeting and talking to people in our community. He has also met with the staff of both funeral homes

Rev Jim is getting to know a lot of our congregational members and has plans to get the church council to work. He is planning to set up a worship committee, and committees to look after the maintenance , upkeep and cleaning of the church building and property . Visitation is high on his list of priorities and a group will be selected to assist with this.

His service this past Sunday indicated that he is a down to earth person and he makes the service meaningful, resulting in a feeling of peace and quiet in a current turbulent world. His message was about the love of God and gives one the sense of how fortunate we are and that we can face the trials and tribulations facing us with a renewed strength and the belief that God is working through us in our everyday life

His singing talent was well noted during his first service and our choir is excited that he may join the choir and bolster the efforts in the back row of the choir loft.

We hope to see everyone back this coming Sunday, along with others who were away for the holiday weekend. Bring a friend. Anyone in the community is welcome to join us at 11 a.m. Sunday

See you on Sunday morn.

Hi Folks,
This coming Sunday is the start of a new chapter for Calvin United Church. Our new minister, Rev Jim (MacNaughton) will be conducting his first service at 11 am.
Jim and his wife Barb (Rev. Barb MacNaughton, new minister at United Protestant in Sydney River) have moved into the manse. Rev. Jim attended last Sunday’s service conducted by Jane Keller, lay minster, and met all those attending the service. Sam Abraham , along with his helpers (Joey, Billy, Sonny, ) have been making some repairs / improvements to the manse and church office over the last week or two. Many thanks to Sam’s crew.
On behalf of Calvin United Church, I would encourage congregation members, along with friends of Calvin and any and all community members to attend our service this coming Sunday, Aug 2nd at 11pm to take in Rev Jim’s service and welcome him to our wonderful community of New Waterford.
Our early experience with Rev Jim ( JIM) , reveals that he is a very friendly , down to earth and genuine gentleman, who is very happy to be leading us in worship and getting to know our congregation and the members of our community. You will see him out and about in New Waterford. Stop and say hello and welcome him to our town
See you on Sunday

Hi members and friends of Calvin,

Just a reminder that this coming Sunday, July 12th. is the last service by our Don Munro, who has led us in worship since mid-August of last year. There will be a presentation to Don at the end of the service and a social afterwards in the fellowship room with tea / small lunch, providing everyone with the opportunity to talk to Don and wish him well in the future ,

Please plan to attend and bring a friend.
Also we welcome anyone from our community and other churches. Calvin Church in the past has been a great support or ecumenism in our town and will continue to be in the future.

A couple of messages from Don’s service last week.

The short version of these is we all need to find time to rest from everyday life and worries. We gotta schedule rest time in our busy days. And church is a place to find quiet and peace of mind
:
“We gather today after another week filled with needs and demands
We come to find rest and renewal of our spirits.
Let go of your demands; Rest in this quiet sanctuary
We want to quietly rest in God’s presence, free from the clamor of the world.
There will always be needs to be met, demands on our time, but now is a time to rest.
We thank God that this time of rest is also a time to be at peace and grow in God’s love. Let us worship with joy!”

“Prayer: Patient Lord, we schedule our lives down to the very second. We crowd in as much activity as we can, and then wonder why we’re so stressed out and tired. We’re afraid to miss out on anything. And when it comes time to be with others, we spend our time worrying about details rather than longing for the visit. Forgive us when we get so caught up in the details and miss the opportunity to sit at your feet, learning, listening, and growing in our faith. Help us place ourselves in your care. Slow us down, so that we can see the wonders you have placed before us, and truly enjoy the blessings you have given to us. We ask this in Jesus’ Name. AMEN.”

“It’s been said that worry is like a rocking chair – it gives you something to do, but it doesn’t get you anywhere.

Hi Folks
Just a reminder, that our Don Munro will be leading our services at Calvin United July 5th and July 12th. This will be his last service. He has been leading and serving Calvin since August 17th of last year. And during that time, he has gotten to meet and become friends with every member of the Church. On July 12th, there will be short time at the end of the service for a thank you and presentation to Don. After church, there will be a gathering in the Fellowship room with tea and a crumpets. All members and friends of Calvin are encourage to attend these two services and, in particular, on July 12
Don has kept our church going for the past year and for that we are extremely thankful. As we start a new phase in the life of Calvin in August, with the arrival of Rev Jim, we wish Don every success in the future and expect that he’ll be back again during vacations and special events. Or a visit on a Sunday morning!
