It is with gratitude and quiet hope that the congregation of Calvin United Church announces the appointment of Rev. Jim MacNaughton, ordained minister, as our new minister beginning August 1, 2026.
This announcement comes as we continue to remember and give thanks for the life and ministry of Rev. Duncan Roach, whose sudden passing last year remains deeply felt in our community.

Rev. Jim’s ministry has taken him to many places, including British Columbia, Saskatchewan, and Nova Scotia. He is married to Rev. Barb, also an ordained minister, who has recently been called to Sydney River United Protestant Church.

With over 44 years of ministry and leadership, Rev. Jim brings spiritual depth, a wealth of experience, and a deep commitment to pastoral care. He looks forward to walking alongsideand leading the congregation with gentleness and respect for all that has been, while helping to nurture what lies ahead. He also hopes to build on past ecumenical relationships and continue the congregation’s engagement in community outreach.

Music and singing are important to Rev. Jim, and our choir director and choir look forward to welcoming him in the months to come.

Please keep Rev. Jim in your prayers as he prepares for this transition, and continue to hold our congregation in prayer as we move forward together in faith.

For God so loved the world that he gave His one and only Son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish but have eternal life.” John 3: 16

During this Easter season, we, at Calvin United, have much to be thankful for as we come together in worship. After the passing of our Rev Duncan last April after 54 years at Calvin, it is now almost a year later. We all have Rev Duncan in our memories and in our mind, but the church is still going strong and that would be Duncan’s wish.

Now, let us come together in worship this Easter together. Let us revisit Jesus’ last days (Good Friday) - the moments of fellowship, of truth, of betrayal, of pain and suffering. Let us join together in celebration and rejoice in the wonder of his resurrection on Easter Sunday. Let us come together as “a people who are the church.

Our Good Friday service is at 11 a.m. and our Easter service is Sunday at 11 a.m.

Dear Friends and Neighbors,
After living through the Lenten season and facing the saddest day of the Christian year, Good Friday, we hear
"He is Risen!" Those are three of the most beautiful words in any language.
We are delighted to invite you and your family to celebrate Easter with us at Calvin United church. Please consider inviting a friend or neighbor, who may need to experience the hope and love of Jesus this season. This special occasion is a time for reflection, renewal, and rejoicing, and we would be honored to have you join us as we commemorate the resurrection of Jesus Christ.
Our Easter service will take place on Sunday, April 5, at 11:00 AM. We have planned a meaningful program that includes inspiring worship music, a heartfelt message, and a wonderful opportunity for fellowship and community. It’s a perfect time to come together in faith and embrace the spirit of Easter. Also note there will be a Good Friday service at 11 am on April 3rd
Celebrate togetherness this Easter and use it as an opportunity to reconnect with family and friends
We hope you can join us for this joyous celebration. Your presence will add to the warmth of our gathering, and we look forward to sharing this sacred time with you.
Easter is a time of hope and renewal. It’s also the perfect occasion to spread love and joy through heartfelt Happy Easter wishes. These thoughtful wishes can uplift spirits, strengthen relationships, and inspire gratitude for the season’s blessings.
May this season bring you the faith to live your dreams. May the blessings of Easter fill your life with peace, joy, and new beginnings. May the blessings of Christ's sacrifice and the joy of His resurrection be with you this Easter.
Easter blessings to you and your family, may you feel the hope of new beginnings, love, and happiness during this joyful Easter holiday.

During Earth Week 2026, The United Church of Canada is joining with numerous denominations and faith-based organizations under one banner, Together for the Love of Creation
Communities of faith, networks, and regions are invited to initiate and participate in climate justice events during the week of April 19–26. Together with fellow members of the national For the Love of Creation effort, this is a great opportunity to show leadership.
It starts with three simple steps. We pray to connect with God and God’s Creation. We learn about the realities and solutions to climate change. And we act— showing leadership for climate justice in our communities, and bringing a clear call for leadership to our Members of Parliament.

We, humans, are but one strand in a web of life, and only one being among many relations. The land and waters are not resources to be exhausted. We need to be leaders that seek balance, repair relations and live with respect in creation today and for seven generations.
—The Right Rev. Dr. Kimberly Heath, Moderator

As mentioned previously, Rev Aaron Billard, a United Church minister in Moncton, performed communion at our regular service on Sunday, March 1st for our community of faith at Calvin church.. He had planned to come to New Waterford to visit family and was very saddened by the passing of Rev Duncan whom he considered to be a mentor and good friend. Our worship leader Don Munro and Rev Aaron worked together and provided an excellent worship service with each taking part in the service. There were a goodly number of Aaron’s family and friends from Calvin and other churches in attendance, who enjoyed the service and received communion with Rev Aaron leading the communion.
This service was quite memorable with shared leadership of Rev Aaron and our Don Munro. We hope that Rev Aaron , will attend and take part in our services upon his future visits.

During the first Sunday of Lent, Feb 22nd Calvin United Church was presented a gift in memory of Rev Duncan from the community of faith at Heritage United Church in Sydney

The Board members of Heritage -- pretty much all of whom knew Rev Duncan and worked with him on projects or attended meetings, etc. over the years -- felt that we should do something to honour Rev. Duncan. Initially, people thought maybe a donation to a charity in his name. But then one Sunday, It was realized that Calvin had only one cloth for the communion Table That's when a discussion about Communion cloths came up. There are different colored cloths for the various liturgical seasons in the church year. Given that Lent is the next season in the Church and Lent's colour is Purple, these communion table cloths were unveiled on the first Sunday of Lent.
There were a goodly number of Heritage United church members attending our service and two of them, along with our Don Munro and Rev Duncan’s wife, Charlotte Roach were involved in the presentation and dedication of these cloths to Calvin United Church.
The congregation of faith at Calvin are very thankful to Heritage United and honored to receive this gift which will be well used in the worship services during the church year, plus will provide a living memorial to our Rev Duncan

Hi Folks
We are pleased to announce that Rev Aaron Billard, a United Church minister in Moncton has offered to perform communion this Sunday, Mar 1st for our community of faith at Calvin church.. He is coming to New Waterford this weekend to visit family. During our conversation, he mentioned that he was very saddened by the passing of Rev Duncan last April. He had talked to Rev. Duncan several times over the past number of years and considered him a mentor and good friend. He has attended Calvin in the last few years with his New Waterford family and took part in services a few years ago.
The opportunity to have communion served at Calvin is greatly appreciated, and is particularly meaningful, during the Christian season of Lent.
Our Don Munro and Rev Aaron, will be conducting the service this Sunday and Calvin church welcomes and encourages all members and friends of Calvin to join us at our 11 a.m. service.
