Arrival at Emmaus

Time of installation 1929

This pair of windows was financed by the children in memory of their parents Hugo Burghardt Sherwood (1847-1925) and Esther Andrews Sherwood (1849 - 1925). These parents had worshiped and been active in both our first church and the one you are in now. In fact their 1873 wedding had to take place in the county courthouse, because the first church had been dismantled and this new church was not yet habitable!

Mr. Sherwood had been one of the signatories of the promissory note that made the financing of the construction of our present building feasible.

This is an Alan McCausland window, 3rd generation.

Light of the World

Time of installation 1934

This stained glass window memorializes William George Wilson (1860-1930) and his wife, Maude Seymour Conger (1860-1930).

Mr. Wilson practiced law, and clerk and legal advisor to the County for close to four decades. He was also involved in another of Archdeacon Bedford-Jones’ fund-raising projects of the era, this one having to do with life insurance policies, a very new idea of the time.

This window was commissioned by their sons, Wilfrid and George. It’s designed, also an Alan McClausland (3rd generation), was inspired by the famous painting. Light of the World, by William Holman Hunt. Almost all of the symbolism of the original painting appears in our stained glass window. Notably missing… there is no bat (which hovers near the door in the original painting). The bat’s omission may have been deliberate - our bats are very real indeed!
