Let us pray

God of life, You have created us to live together with family and friends to care for each other and to grow together. As we do life together, we see the uniqueness and beauty of how each person brings important blessings and skills to the community that brings out a different element in each other. The unique community is brought together for a purpose to create a wonderful picture of what heaven will be. We live together in the gift of Jesus’ loving life that brings complete strangers together in grace filled community.
Grant us the heart to trust You Jesus as You bring us together in life and community. Help us to truly seek You and Your will instead of seeking out our own wants in our limited understanding of life. Help us to be examples of Your grace and forgiveness and do life together through joy and grief, helping each other to see and live in faith.
We pray this in Jesus’ name, Amen.

Let us pray

God of hope and steadfast love, help us to walk together with You and each other in unity and life. Open our eyes to see the possibilities that unfold before us when we move in Your unlimited grace.
Prepare our lives to heal from our sin and the brokenness of the world so that we might be able to experience your faithfulness in its fullness everyday of our lives. May Your grace working in us shine through for others to see You and Your redemptive and transformative power in our lives and the world. In You we have the hope to work towards new life and as You are preparing us to receive it.
Change our hearts from fearful to grace filled, from broken to resilient, from ignored to in tune with You. Help us to live in Your ways of life instead of getting caught up in the vagueness of sin so that we might all flourish and grow because of Your leading and redeeming in our lives.

We pray this all in the holy and life-giving name of Jesus, Amen.

Better together

In Acts chapter two we see the disciples together when the Holy Spirit comes on them. Then thee thousand people were added to their number. From here they spent time together learning what Jesus had taught and taking care of each others needs. They would help each each other and care for each other. This was a powerful example of how the Holy Spirit can and does bring us together. They were able share Jesus’ teaching together, they were able to help those who had nothing by selling their possessions, they were able to address their needs by being honest and not being afraid by what others would say. They each saw each other as dearly loved children of God instead of their social standing. Jesus and the HolySpirit cleared the way for divine community that enabled life.

Look for ways to be community enlivened by the Holy Spirit building each other up in faith and helping each other to live life together.

Come together in support

The early church recognized the importance of coming together to support each other and those in need. We see this in how they shared property and possessions, how they put such a high priority on this. Decision were made to make sure that people were cared for equally.

Are we able to see the needs of people or do we only see what we want to see? Do we support people where they are at or where we think they are at? Do we allow our biases to dictate our actions or do we see people with the same love that Jesus does? As we gather in the name of Jesus, as we help in our communities we need to do so being guided by the Holy Spirit, sharing both words of life and the necessities of life with those who are in need. The gift that Jesus gives us not just about words but also about healing and feeding. The blessing that Jesus brings is just about today but about eternity also.

As a community of faith as we trying to bring people together for our sake or share Jesus love and help to all who would receive it? We need to act not simply in how we think is best but to closely listen to the Holy Spirit leading us in ministry and life together.

Following the Holy Spirit into Community

Jesus showed the disciples what it means to live in community. They were shown how to share with those who were like minded but also those they had real grievances with. At the beginning of the Book of Acts, we see the Holy Spirit bringing thousands into community. The Holy Spirit brings us into community with people who are different, yet the differences help us all to be better people and to see the fullness of who Jesus truly is. In community we are taught not just to live together but to do life together. To many people live together but really live separate lives. But living in community invites us to bring what Jesus is doing in our lives and adding it with what Jesus is doing in others lives and helping each other to grow in faith.

As we grow in faith together, we see how community starts to support not just ourselves but those outside as the community becomes a symbol of caring and support. As we do life together, others see what life can be in and because of community changing who we are, bettering all that we have been and will be.

Community makes us better because of what the Holy Spirit is doing in and through us.

Let us pray

God of life, help us t appreciate the beauty of sharing life with others. Help us to see the beautiful treasures in our everyday interactions as we not just share time and space but learn to connect with each other on a spiritual level. This connection helps to bring us closer to who we are, and we learn to trust each other with with this sacred gift. Teach us to see how precious each person is and to be able to see Your divine image in each person.

God of creation, help us to appreciate life that is all around us. Help us to see the intricacies of nature and humanity and to be able to see Your hand at work in the blessing of shared life.

Jesus, we pray this all in Your life-giving name, Amen.

Let us pray

God of new life, we thank You for the gift of a new heart and Your Holy Spirit. We thank You for the new life that it leads us into and the hope that they instil in our being. We know we cannot fully live life without these gifts. With Your Holy Spirit we have a deeper connection to You and to those around us. With the new undivided heart, we are not distracted by the many things that would lead us into sin and rebellion. Yes, the temptations call out to us but You are helping us to resist them. They do not have the same allure as they once did, their hold on us has been broken. We see the world around us and the people You have blessed us to live life with in a new light that draws us closer and appreciates each person in a new and meaningful way.
We thank You in Jesus’s name, Amen.

New identity

When we look at Ezekiel 11:17-20, we see God willing to give to us the opportunity to be changed, to be freed from our sinful ways and to be restored into relationship with God himself. God offers to help us if we are willing to be helped. He offers to restore us into a covenant relationship instead of leaving us on a path that leads not just to personal trouble but also to communal problems.

When we look at the Bible we see both individual responsibility but also responsibility to community. Our identity is not just about ourselves; it is also connected to the wider community. To often we focus just on ourselves and our own wants and desires. We think that it is all about me or that my actions only affect myself but in reality, it affects everyone around us. It affects who we are as a family, as a community, as a people.

God’s promise of an undivided heart and a new spirit, giving us a heart of flesh, taking away the heart of stone, is not just about individual change, it is about communal change. About changing our identities from dying to alive, from condemned to forgiven, and from detestable to loved. God is willing to do that for us today and is doing this through Jesus and the work of the Holy Spirit. We are made new and it affects everything.

A new Spirit

In Ezekiel chapter 11 verse 19, God says through the prophet Ezekiel that God will give His people a new spirit, an undivided heart, remove their hearts of stone and give them a heart of flesh. Essentially God is saying to His people that He is giving them new life. The change in how we live in this world is not just about our physical bodies it is about our whole being. While the heart pumps blood through our body, the spirit gives us life and animates us. Both together change how we live and interact with the world around us, with each other and with God Himself.

The new spirit that God promises isn’t just about bringing us new life, it is also about a deeper connection with God himself. We see this gift of a new spirit in Acts chapter two and in John chapter 20 verses 22-23. The Holy Spirit is given to the disciples and through the rest of the book of Acts we see the importance of the Holy Spirit changing the disciples’ lives and being given to many other people.

God’s gift of a new spirit doesn’t leave us as we are but changes us to be more in tune with God Himself and all of creation, if we will take time to pay attention.
