This hymn from Bridegroom Matins is one of the most moving prayers of Holy Week.

In it, the soul speaks to Christ and says: I see Your bridal chamber, O my Savior, adorned, but I do not have the garment to enter it.

The “bridal chamber” is not simply a wedding room in the ordinary sense. In the language of the Church, it points to the Kingdom of God, the joy of salvation and the union of the soul with Christ the Bridegroom.

The hymn is deeply personal and full of repentance. It’s the cry of a soul that sees the beauty, holiness and glory prepared by God, yet also sees its own unworthiness and lack of preparation.

That’s why the prayer continues: “Make radiant the garment of my soul, O Giver of Light and save me.”
The “garment” is the spiritual state of the soul: purity, repentance, grace and readiness to enter into communion with Christ.

This chant reminds us that Holy Week is not only about remembering the events of Christ’s Passion. It’s also a call to examine ourselves, to awaken spiritually and to ask God to prepare our hearts for His Resurrection.

Take a moment today to reflect: Is my soul prepared to meet Christ? This invitation isn’t something that only happened over 2000 years ago. We are invited, but are we truly preparing our soul?

“Then he said to his servants, ‘The wedding is ready, but those who were invited were not worthy.
Therefore go into the highways, and as many as you find, invite to the wedding.’” ~ Matthew 22:8-9
