“We Found Him!”

For many years now I have been helping John Ertsos, the Greek evangelist, by maintaining his three-minute message phone line that people can call to hear the Gospel in Greek. Several years ago, I was listening to the messages that people had left on the answering machine when the voice of an elderly woman made me hold my breath.
She was crying desperately and repeating: “I am old and alone, all alone. Can anyone please, please help me?” Without leaving her name or phone number, she hung up. She called twice after that, the third time exclaiming, “I have been looking for someone to help me — not materially, but spiritually! Oh, Blessed Virgin Mary, can anyone help me?” She was searching for someone to help her but I couldn’t do anything. She never identified herself.
A few days later I got a phone call and this time we knew the young woman. She had called to say “Thank you” and “Good bye”. She had taken a bottle of pills and she was going to die. Why? She was hurting, lonely and desperate. This time we were able to help. When the ambulance reached her, she was already unconscious but, with God’s help, she survived.
People everywhere are crying out, “Who can help me find some peace and joy in life? To whom should I go?” Even Apostle Peter asked,
 Lord, to whom shall we go? You have the words of eternal life. We believe and know that you are the Holy One of God. (John 6:68-69)
King David said:
 Taste and see that the Lord is good. (Psalm 34:8)
But how can people “taste” God unless someone brings them to Him? If you have tasted the Lord, should you keep it a secret?
The first thing Andrew did was find his brother, Simon, and give him the good news:
 We have found the Messiah… (John 1:41)
Then he brought his brother to Jesus and Jesus changed Simon’s name to Peter. Philip found Nathaniel and invited him to come, saying,
 We have found…Jesus of Nazareth… come and see…
(John 1:45-46)
An unbeliever was heard saying, “If I believed in all the things you Christians believe in, like heaven and hell, eternity and life after death… I would stand in the middle of the street and yell, ‘Stop! Stop all of you and turn to Jesus or else you will be lost forever!’”
We do the bringing. God does the rest. The person you bring to Christ might be prepared and ready to be a great spiritual leader but you must still do your part. God knows each of us but He does not force His way into our lives. We must make Him our God and King.

Why?

When people face tragic circumstances they usually look for explanations. I remember a mother who had just been informed that her four children, her husband and her son-in-law had been killed in a terrible car accident. After the initial shock and the cry, “Why Lord?” she turned to those around her and said, “The Lord gave them to me and the Lord took them away. Glory to His name.”
Questions like “Why?”, “Why me?” and “Why now?” have no easy answers. Often we volunteer answers or explanations about tragic events, without thinking about the effects of our words. I have heard people blame God, the parents of a sick child, or the lack of faith of a person who is very sick or who cannot find a job and so on.
This was the attitude of the disciples when they saw a blind man and asked Jesus, “Rabbi, who sinned, this man or his parents, that he was born blind?” Many believed the blindness was punishment for sin, either his or his parents’. But let’s look at Jesus’ reply:
 Neither this man nor his parents sinned… but this happened so that the work of God might be displayed in his life. (John 9:3)
Why is there so much bad news in the world today? The Bible has the answer to that question: This is a fallen world, corrupted by sin and dominated by Satan. The goal of Satan and his angels is to corrupt and destroy whatever and whomever they can.
But let’s not stop there! There is also good news in the world today. God has intervened by sending His Son Jesus to break the power of sin and purify for Himself a people that are His very own (Titus 2:14). Through His people, God wants to demonstrate His power and glory in good times and in bad times.
Dear reader, will you volunteer to be that kind of an example and object lesson to those around you today?

Keep the Words

In the past few years I have been buying many books on health and healthy eating. I have read most of them and have found them to be helpful. Most of them make a lot of sense. However, although I like the books and the detailed instructions in them, I have to admit that I have not always put into practice the advice given in these guides. I am not “keeping the words” of the books I read.
Many people read books, enjoy them, recommend them to others and even defend them…but they themselves don’t adhere to what the books say. This is the same for many who read the Bible but don’t “keep the words” in it. Of course, to be able to do the things we read we must first understand them.
Revelation 22:7 begins with the word “behold.” This is an order to look, to pay attention. Then Jesus says, “I am coming soon!” and He repeats that in verses 12 and 20: “Yes, I am coming soon.” It may be sooner than we think. It may be today or tomorrow or a few years from now. In any case, each one of us will see Him, either when He returns or when we are called home.
Jesus makes another thing very clear: that only those who keep His words will be blessed. In other words, only those who read the Bible and obey it will be blessed. God has said many things in the Bible, but we will focus on Jesus’ words in Revelation 22:7-21.
First, though, let’s take a look at John’s report of what the angel said on behalf of God.
 I, John, am the one who heard and saw these things. And when I had heard and seen them, I fell down to worship at the feet of the angel who had been showing them to me. But he said to me, “Do not do it! I am a fellow servant with you and with your brothers the prophets and of all who keep the words of this book. Worship God!” (Revelation 22:8-9)
“Worship God.” This order goes all the way back to the Ten Commandments. We are not to worship angels. We are not to worship saints, teachings or doctrines. Anything we put before Jesus Christ is an idol. We cannot even make anything else equal with God.
That’s what is so subtle about those who put so many other things with or ahead of God. They talk and preach about the Church, the saints, Mary, and Christ’s teachings… but you can’t find Jesus Christ in their lives even if you search with a flashlight. You would have to get past the men, women, angels, religion, customs and doctrines before you found Christ.
 Behold, I am coming soon! My reward is with me, and I will give to everyone according to what he has done. (Revelation 22:12)
This is not teaching salvation by works, but rather works as the fruit and proof of salvation. Jesus is reminding His followers to not practise sin. He wants us to keep our robes, which He washed with His blood, clean. Jesus is telling us to “keep the words of this book.” Don’t just read them. Live them.

Who Can Solve Our Problems?

A few years ago, my wife was talking to me about some conversations she had had with people she knew well and others whom she hardly knew. She was speaking to me passionately and I could see pain on her face. When I interrupted her with a comment, she stopped for a moment and then exclaimed, “Everyone has a problem! What’s going on? There is so much pain out there.”
Yes, there are problems, no matter where you look. Babies have problems; children and young people have problems; parents, husbands and wives; governments and politicians; churches, their members and leaders; you and I… we all have problems!
There are all kinds of problems… and there are many of them. But the biggest problem is that there are few, if any, problem solvers. It wouldn’t matter how big your problem was if you knew an infinite Problem Solver.
Sickness, guilt, financial uncertainty, loss of a loved one, doubts, fears, loneliness and depression are only some of the problems people have to deal with on a daily basis. And people will try almost anything to solve their problems… anything except the right thing.
What is the right thing? Of course, the right thing is to go to the Master Problem Solver — Jesus, God Himself!
But that is too simple and unrealistic for some people, and so they go on searching for someone or something else to fix their problems…all in vain.
In Matthew 9, we see that Jesus has both the ability and the authority to solve problems — physical, emotional and spiritual. The problem, of course, was that people were not willing to accept Jesus. Some were indifferent to His claims, others were angry. But those who believed Him and accepted His claims and came to Him had their needs met and their problems solved.
To the questioning and rebellious heart, Jesus proved His authority to forgive sins by demonstrating His power to heal. The effect was instantaneous and remarkable: the people feared and glorified God (verse 😎. Then, one after the other, a paralysed man, a ruler, a woman who was bleeding for 12 years, two blind men and a mute demoniac crossed His path.
Jesus met their personal needs with strong but tender words and spoke to each one of them a message of peace and courage. Jesus continued His ministry… preaching, teaching, healing and spreading the good news of the Kingdom. And He still does today.
Dear friend, God may not always give you the wisdom to solve your own problem, but you can be sure that Jesus is strong enough to handle it, compassionate enough to feel it, loving enough to care for it and wise enough to deal with it. Turn your worries over to the One who never fails to solve our problems.
