Searching for peace outside myself, I may find tranquility beside a flowing stream, in the soft quiet of a library or museum, or in the company of a beloved pet.

As enjoyable and calming as these interludes may be, the peace they provide may be fleeting. But the best, most enduring peace is the peace of God alive in me, my comfort and center no matter where I am or what I am doing.

To claim this peace, I relax into the stillness of prayer and sink into deep bliss. I feel serenity fill me, crowding out the noise of my mind, the intrusiveness of my thoughts, and soothing my jangled nerves. I no longer need certain conditions or locations to feel peaceful. I am no longer disturbed by unwelcome developments because God’s peace is my peace.

To set the mind on the flesh is death, but to set the mind on the Spirit is life and peace.—Romans 8:6

Our most recent month together took us to a place beyond language. This month, we'll be guided by poet Mary Oliver's instructions to "Pay attention. Be astonished. Tell about it." We’ll deepen your sense of wonder and hone our conscious awareness in surprising and pleasurable new ways.

We begin with our congregational celebration of the autumn equinox called Listening to Autumn. This is followed by three Sundays of an enlivening and fun encountering practice. We begin with a demonstration of ways our deep attention transforms even the most ordinary objects. The following Sunday, our encounters will deepen into surprise, relationship, deep time and reciprocity. Our last Sunday together, explores ways attention and felt experience can be expressed and shared with others. Come ready to have fun and be with each other for this turn in the seasons.

Today I bless and give thanks for the wide array of creatures in my life. From the pets who provide companionship and comfort to the wild animals who inhabit the earth and contribute to its diversity, I appreciate and am enriched by them.

I also bless those special people who work to shape healthy attitudes toward the world’s creatures. Their work to educate others and protect various animal species is a great blessing.

I pray the animals in my life know peace, care, and kind, ethical treatment. I also pray a prayer of gratitude for my animal friends whose paws, claws, and hooves are no longer on the earth. They will always live in my heart.

God made the wild animals of the earth of every kind and the cattle of every kind and everything that creeps upon the ground of every kind. And God saw that it was good.—Genesis 1:25

On St. Francis Day, we move from paying attention to receiving what an encounter reveals. Inspired by Francis’s recognition of animals, elements, and Earth as kin, we will explore how ordinary encounters can awaken wonder, deepen belonging, and renew our relationship with the living world. Through gentle contemplative practice, we will learn a simple way to slow habitual thinking, become more fully present, and listen for what life may be inviting us to be. Come and rediscover the extraordinary presence within the seemingly ordinary.
