Ilorin's Position as a Centre of Islam in Yorubaland Remains Unmatched – Grand M***i

The Grand M***i of Yorubaland, Sheikh Daood Imran Molaasan, has described Ilorin as an unparalleled centre of Islam in Yorubaland, noting that no other city in the region has attained its unique blend of Islamic leadership, and governance.

The Grand M***i made this assertion on Saturday, 13 June, 2026, during a courtesy visit to the newly appointed Chief Imam of Ilorin, Sheikh Muhammad Bashir Dansuki.

Speaking during the visit, Sheikh said it was incumbent upon every conscious Muslim who truly understands the significance of Islam and its history in the region to visit Ilorin and congratulate the new Chief Imam on his appointment.

According to him, the Islamic legacy established in Ilorin by the renowned scholar, Sheikh Alimi, was not limited to Da'wah (Islamic propagation) alone but was accompanied by Imaarah—a structured system of Islamic leadership and administration.

"The Islam established by Sheikh Alimi in Ilorin came with Imaarah. It was not merely about preaching and propagation; it encompassed leadership, organisation, and governance. No other place in Yorubaland has attained this unique status," he stated.

The Grand M***i further prayed for the successful tenure of the new Chief Imam and urged Muslims to continue supporting religious institutions and leaders in the collective interest of Islam and the Muslim Ummah.

One Understanding: The Foundation Of Islamic Strength And Establishment-Grand M***i

Islam began with one leader, the Prophet Muhammad (saw) and one divine guidance or syllabus. This produced a unified understanding of the faith, which united the Muslim Ummah and laid the foundation for great Islamic civilizations and empires that flourished for centuries.

The best demonstration of this can be seen in Salah (prayer), where Muslims stand together in orderly rows behind a single Imam, symbolizing the ideal structure of the Ummah: unity, discipline, and common purpose or understanding.

If one leadership and one understanding was a major factor in the success and strength of the early Muslim Ummah, then division in understanding and the absence of one leadership to direct the affairs of Muslims toward development and the establishment of Islam can only result in weakness, stagnation, and setbacks.

Therefore, we must recognize that the strength and emancipation of the Muslim Ummah lie in one understanding, adherence to authentic Islamic teachings, and commitment to righteous leadership that guides the Muslim ummah toward progress and success.
