Today we’re highlighting Nepali as part of our series of invitations in different languages.
Nepali is the main language of Nepal and is spoken by millions of people around the world, including members of the Nepali community here in Canada.
Nepal has seen a remarkable growth of Christianity over the past several decades. Christianity remains a minority faith, but churches and Christian communities have grown significantly. Joshua Project currently estimates that about 1.4% of Nepal’s population identifies as Christian. It does not give a reliable national estimate for the percentage who are evangelical, noting that the available data varies considerably. ([Joshua Project][1])
At the same time, Christians in Nepal can face significant challenges. Nepal's laws place restrictions on proselytizing and certain forms of religious expression. The U.S. Commission on International Religious Freedom has reported that these legal restrictions particularly affect religious minorities, including Christians. ([USCIRF][2])
Joshua Project currently lists 194 people groups in Nepal, with 183 classified as unreached. It estimates that 94.3% of Nepal's people groups remain unreached, which illustrates how much opportunity there still is for people to hear the Gospel. ([Joshua Project][1])
The Bible has also been translated into Nepali, making the message of Scripture available in the language spoken by the people of Nepal.
Jesus said:
“I am the way, the truth, and the life.”
— John 14:6
We believe the message about Jesus Christ is for every people, every culture and every language.
