“The Way is in training.”
Miyamoto Musashi, The Book of Five Rings, Ground Book (1645, tr. Victor Harris)

Reading about martial arts is fun and videos help, but the Way itself is found on the mat, one class at a time. With the autumn evenings drawing in, it's a good season to build the habit.

Behind the scenes: gi on, belt tied, Bujinkan patch on the chest. Ready to train.

There's something about putting on the uniform that switches your head into training mode. The day's stress stays at the door, and for the next hour it's just you, your partners and the work.

Japanese term of the week: 稽古 Keiko, "training" or "practice".

The characters mean something like "considering the old". Each class, we study movements passed down through generations of teachers and try to understand them a little better than last time. That's keiko: not just exercise, but study.

石の上にも三年 Ishi no ue ni mo sannen: "three years on a stone, and even it grows warm." A traditional Japanese proverb about patience.

Some techniques click on day one. Others take years of steady practice before they feel natural. Keep showing up and the stone warms up.

Question for you: if you could only train one for the next year, which would you pick? Sword, staff or empty hands?

In the Bujinkan we train all three, and each one teaches the others. The staff teaches distance, the sword teaches timing, and taijutsu ties it all together.

Tell us your pick (and why) in the comments.

“Short sword, so you can get nice and close.”

Kodachijutsu Waza #1 starts as your partner approaches. Strike the ribs first, then cut to the neck or collarbone, pressing down if you need extra power. Simple, direct and a great first technique to drill.

Behind the scenes at Divine Warrior Ninjutsu.

Before the bow-in and the drills, there's this: catching up, a few laughs and getting the mat ready. Training partners turn into friends pretty quickly when you look after each other on the mat.

Japanese term of the week: 受身 Ukemi, "receiving body".

Most people think of it as rolls and breakfalls, and it is. But ukemi is really about receiving whatever comes at you (a throw, a strike, a lock) and staying safe, balanced and ready to move. Good ukemi is what lets you keep training hard for years.

Learn it step by step with us: https://divinewarriorninjutsu.mykajabi.com/1
