Canadian Association of Jews and Muslims (CAJM)

Canadian Association of Jews and Muslims (CAJM) Bringing members of the Jewish and Muslim communities in Canada closer together. We invite all likeminded people to join us.

Canadian Association of Jews and Muslims
The Canadian Association of Jews and Muslims (CAJM) was established in June
1996. Our purpose is to bring members of the Jewish and Muslim communities in Canada closer together, to promote positive interaction, and to work together to counter problems faced by both communities. Our objectives are to learn, understand and jointly work together, in order to

promote harmony between Canadian Muslims and Jews. Since September 11, 2001 we have been meeting regularly with a reinvigorated sense of purpose to create a model in Canada for Jewish/Muslim bilateral co-operation in fighting the increase in hate crimes, stereotyping, backlash, discrimination, anti-Semitism and Islamophobia faced by our communities. While CAJM has a strictly defined focus of dealing with issues of mutual concern in the most positive, productive and constructive manner, we discuss a broad spectrum of world issues, which may impact our two groups in Canada. Our most important strength is that whatever position CAJM takes, we do it jointly, and in the interests of both groups. We may speak out in favour of a particular viewpoint, but only with agreement and understanding of members of both communities. We value diversity of opinion and respectfully listen to different viewpoints without finger pointing, generalizing or blaming either group. CAJM strives to play an educational role in conveying its message in a visible manner to the general public. We are deeply committed to engaging in open and free discussion of difficult, controversial and sensitive issues. We use a variety of approaches to building relationships between our communities including seminars, special events, cultural exchanges, publications, youth activities, exchanges of speakers and community leaders, and the annual Weekend of Twinning between synagogues and mosques. We continue to work on our goals of mutual understanding and respect, and are seen as a model of cooperation between Jews and Muslims locally, nationally and internationally. Glad to have been a promotional partner in the Enhancing Social Justice Education groups Dec 5th symposium: Stop the Hate - Start the Dialogue! : Strategies to reduce polarization in education and the workplace today. In CAJM's view, it's CONTINUE the dialogue, and continue building relationships and allies for human rights and justice for all. Thank you to esjeducation.ca and the Harmony Movement and all the allies and amazing volunteers who put together this timely conference.

Wishing all those who celebrate it a heart felt Shana Tova (a good year)! May it be a sweeter year ahead, one of health, safety, justice and peace. And may we all continue to work TOGETHER to achieve that. To all those who love Jerusalem (Jews, Muslims, Palestinians, Israelis and others) let us continue to work AND pray together to make it so. ✡️ ☪️ ✝️ ☮️ 🕊 ❤️

On the limits of speaking ones truth and resistance from the margins. I read and re-read bell hooks, and 'yours in struggle' when I feel let down by people I thought were allies.

"Silenced. We fear those who speak about us, who do not speak to us and with us…We know that the forces that silence us, because they never want us to speak, differ from the forces that say speak, tell me your story. Only do not speak in a voice of resistance. Only speak from that space in the margin that is a sign of deprivation, a wound, an unfulfilled longing. Only speak your pain. (bell hooks, 2015)

Sadly, this rings so true today with people who are in pain in their schools and workplaces and now find themselves on the margins of DEI/human rights/social justice/counselling spaces, with no where to turn to speak their truth.

We need to bring back the spirit, ethos and accomplishments of this important group. Some of its leadership are gone now, others have gone on to other things, as life intervened. Some of us refuse to give up ! It's more important now than ever!

Founded more than two decades ago, the Canadian Association of Jews and Muslims is a trailblazer for interfaith dialogue in Canada. Our organization was launched on June 23, 1996 with a symposium featuring pioneers recognizing the importance bringing members of different faiths together.

Sabeeha Rehman and I had a wonderful 'north of the border' zoom webinar about our book "We Refuse To Be Enemies" sponsored by JSpace Canada, in cooperation with the Canadian Association of Jews and Muslims, Project Rozana Canada , Holy Blossom Temple, Intercultural Dialogue Institute, Solel Congregation, Heart to Heart, Faith of Life and others. There were well over 100 participants at the webinar and after our presentation, we had deeply enriching question and answer session.

The moderators of the event were two of my oldest friends in Muslim-Jewish work, Karen Mock, President of JSpace Canada and Shahid Akhtar, co-founder and co-chair of the Toronto-based Canadian Association of Jews and Muslims (CAJM), founded in 1996 and perhaps the oldest continually operating Muslim-Jewish friendship and cooperation organization in the world. I had the privilege to work closely with Karen, Shahid and CAJM co-chair Barbara Landau during my years at The Foundation For Ethnic Understanding-FFEU; setting up scores of twinning events in Toronto, bringing together mosques, synagogues and Muslim and Jewish organizations, with the support of CAJM, JSpace, the University of Toronto and other bodies. I was deeply moved by Shahid's sharing last night of warm memories of our work together through the years--sometimes in highly challenging circumstances, to strengthen Muslim-Jewish communication and cooperation in Toronto and across Canada.

Indeed, Karen worked closely with me to facilitate memorable twinning events in Montreal, and I had the opportunity to work also with Muslim-Jewish solidarity efforts in other Canadian cities including Hamilton, Ottawa, Winnipeg and Calgary. I have learned so much from Karen, Barb and Shahid about principles of mediation and reconciliation that have been incredibly helpful to me in my work in Muslim-Jewish relations.

Last night, all of us expressed similar sentiments; that Jews and Muslims in North America must now operate on two overlapping tracks. On one hand, we must do everything possible to help our Palestinian and Israeli brothers end the violence, reach a just settlement guaranteeing security, justice and self-determination for both peoples; and to support the work of humanitarian NGO's operating on the ground in Israel-Palestine like Project Rozana, which brings together Israelis and Palestinians through health care; running programs like Wheels of Hope which saves the lives of Palestinian children with cancer and in need of kidney dialysis by arranging their transportation to hospitals in Israel. At the same time, we must work hard to prevent the upsurge in the Israeli-Palestinian conflict from splintering our Muslim-Jewish alliance here in North America that we have worked so hard to build over the past 15 years. What is needed now, as never before, is a willingness by people on both sides to reach across the psychic barricades, look each other in the eye, acknowledge each other’s pain, and declare, ‘We Refuse to be Enemies.’

Karen, Shahid and Barbara and all of my other wonderful Canadian friends, thanks so much for so memorably hosting Sabeeha and I,and thanks for your huge contribution to Muslim-Jewish friendship and trust in Canada and far beyond.
Sincerely,
Walter Ruby
