Now what?
You go to a sporting event, but now it's over... Now what? You plan the wedding for months and now it's over... Now what? You plan the vacation for weeks, and now you got the sun-tan... Now what? You plan for a beautiful Easter service and now it's over... Now what?
You create (or re-create) the world, and now it's "very good." Now what?
When God created the world, he did it in six days (Sunday-Friday). On the sixth day, Friday, he created man in his image from the dust of the ground. On the seventh day, Saturday, he rested. This is where the Old Testament believers received the command to Sabbath. Can you imagine that very first Saturday in the brand new world? Adam and Eve...God...just chillin'. Looking out at everything God created and just marveling at how "good" it was. And then came the second Sunday in this new world, the eighth day of the existence of this universe... Now what?
We can infer quite a bit of what Adam and Eve did on day 8 from the Genesis account. We know that they worked, because God had given them the garden to subdue and receive from. We know that they worshipped, because they were with God. We know that they listened to God talk as they walked together in the cool of the day. We know that they served and enjoyed one another as bone and flesh made one.
Remember, there's no conflict in this world, no grand drama to play out, no enemies to defeat, no problems to solve. That's generally how we find meaning in life today. We're always trying to "slay the dragon" of income, relationships, reputation, or comfort. But that didn't exist here.
They simply enjoyed.
When God re-created the world, he also did it in a week. Not specifically in six days, but in the same rhythm. It was Friday, the seventh day of Holy Week, that God re-created man from his image as Jesus died. This time, instead of from dust, pictured in the water and blood (read: Baptism and Lord's Supper) from Jesus' side that create this new Humanity. And then on the seventh day...he rested...in a tomb.
But then... The eighth day. Sunday. Easter.
New. Life.
Now what?
We may feel like life is still playing out the grand drama, and in a certain sense, there are still those who have not heard the message that "It is finished" or refuse to believe in it their arrogance. We ought to tell those folks.
But at the core, the drama is over, the conflict is done, the victory is complete.
Now what? Live.
Enjoy the creation. Work because work is good and blesses your neighbour. Enjoy your spouse as your bone and flesh, love your children as rewards from the Lord. Be generous with the same attitude as Adam and Eve who could clearly see that everything they ever needed was obviously going to be provided. Walk with God and listen to God because he wants to talk to you.
Jesus rose to restore life. Now, you get to live it.
Serving Jesus for you and with you,
Pastor Caleb
