When nations behave like empires, the prophets sound remarkably contemporary.

The ancient world was ruled by predatory kingdoms that dominated the weak through conquest, displacement, and exploitation. The prophets knew that world well.

Yet Christians must be careful. Israel had a unique covenant relationship with God. While Gentile believers are grafted into God’s covenant people, the New Testament’s “holy nation” is the church of Jesus Christ, gathered from every nation-state. No modern country inherits Israel’s covenant promises.

Millennia ago, before the prophet Amos judged Israel, he condemned surrounding nations... not for breaking Israel’s Sabbath, but for cruelty, trafficking, and relentless vengeance. So, nations need not be Israel to be accountable to Israel’s God.

This brings us to this Sunday's reading in Ezekiel 33:11. God says to the nation, Israel: “As I live... I take no pleasure in the death of the wicked, but that the wicked turn from their ways and live.” Though spoken only to Israel, these words reveal God’s character: He does not delight in destruction but calls the wicked nation to turn from death’s path. This is no prosperity formula. It is a lament: Why walk toward ruin? Turn!

For Christians, the call is clearer. Jesus not only shows us what to turn from; he shows us where to turn: “Follow me.”

The way of empire claims strength justifies domination. Christ shows another way: service, mercy, and love of neighbour.

The call still rings: Turn. In Jesus, God has shown us where.

Two powerful earthquakes (7.2 followed by 7.5 magnitude) struck north-central Venezuela in rapid succession on Wednesday, 24 June, at 18:04 local time. Striking just 39 seconds apart, the twin quakes have flattened homes and devastated entire communities across the Capital District, La Guaira, and surrounding states. According to latest reports, at least 235 people have died and more than 4,300 are injured, with hundreds still missing. Sadly, we expect these numbers to increase as rescue teams continue to search the rubble. Please join us in praying for the families affected by this tragedy. Donations are urgently needed. The PCC's relief and development agency, PWS&D, is able to respond through the ACT Alliance, which has members operating in Venezuela. Read more at
