Tuesday within 9th week in Ordinary Time Tear A
Mk 12:13-17
In today’s gospel, Jesus is confronted with a trap designed to force Him into choosing between loyalty to God and loyalty to earthly authority. Yet with divine wisdom, He rises above the false dilemma and asks, “Whose image is on the coin?” When they answer, “Caesar’s,” Jesus responds, “Give to Caesar what belongs to Caesar and to God what belongs to God.” His words remind us that while we live within human societies and responsibilities, our deepest identity and ultimate allegiance belong to God. Just as the coin bears Caesar’s image, our hearts bear the image of the Creator who fashioned us in love.
This Gospel challenges us to examine what we are giving to God. We often fulfill our civic duties, manage our work, and attend to countless daily obligations, yet we sometimes offer God only the leftovers of our time, attention, and affection. Jesus invites us to recognize that everything we are and everything we have is a gift from God. Our talents, relationships, opportunities, and even our very lives belong to Him. To give God what belongs to God means offering Him not merely rituals or words, but our whole selves in faith, gratitude, and obedience.
As disciples of Christ, we are called to live faithfully in both the world and the Kingdom of God. We are to be responsible citizens, compassionate neighbors, and honest stewards, while never forgetting that our true home is with the Lord. When we allow God to reign in our hearts, every aspect of our lives becomes an act of worship. May this Gospel inspire us to reflect on the image we carry within us and to respond generously to God’s love by giving Him the honor, trust, and devotion that rightfully belong to Him.
