OLD TESTAMENT
Genesis 3:1–21

Now the serpent was more crafty than any other beast of the field that the Lord God had made.

He said to the woman, “Did God actually say, ‘You shall not eat of any tree in the garden’?” And the woman said to the serpent, “We may eat of the fruit of the trees in the garden, but God said, ‘You shall not eat of the fruit of the tree that is in the midst of the garden, neither shall you touch it, lest you die.’” But the serpent said to the woman, “You will not surely die. For God knows that when you eat of it your eyes will be opened, and you will be like God, knowing good and evil.” So when the woman saw that the tree was good for food, and that it was a delight to the eyes, and that the tree was to be desired to make one wise, she took of its fruit and ate, and she also gave some to her husband who was with her, and he ate. Then the eyes of both were opened, and they knew that they were naked. And they sewed fig leaves together and made themselves loincloths.

And they heard the sound of the Lord God walking in the garden in the cool of the day, and the man and his wife hid themselves from the presence of the Lord God among the trees of the garden. But the Lord God called to the man and said to him, “Where are you?” And he said, “I heard the sound of you in the garden, and I was afraid, because I was naked, and I hid myself.” He said, “Who told you that you were naked? Have you eaten of the tree of which I commanded you not to eat?” The man said, “The woman whom you gave to be with me, she gave me fruit of the tree, and I ate.” Then the Lord God said to the woman, “What is this that you have done?” The woman said, “The serpent deceived me, and I ate.”

The Lord God said to the serpent,

“Because you have done this,
cursed are you above all livestock
and above all beasts of the field;
on your belly you shall go,
and dust you shall eat
all the days of your life.
I will put enmity between you and the woman,
and between your offspring and her offspring;
he shall bruise your head,
and you shall bruise his heel.”

To the woman he said,

“I will surely multiply your pain in childbearing;
in pain you shall bring forth children.
Your desire shall be for your husband,
and he shall rule over you.”

And to Adam he said,

“Because you have listened to the voice of your wife
and have eaten of the tree
of which I commanded you,
‘You shall not eat of it,’
cursed is the ground because of you;
in pain you shall eat of it all the days of your life;
thorns and thistles it shall bring forth for you;
and you shall eat the plants of the field.
By the sweat of your face
you shall eat bread,
till you return to the ground,
for out of it you were taken;
for you are dust,
and to dust you shall return.”

The man called his wife’s name Eve, because she was the mother of all living. And the Lord God made for Adam and for his wife garments of skins and clothed them.

GOSPEL
Matthew 4:1–11

Then Jesus was led up by the Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted by the devil. And after fasting forty days and forty nights, he was hungry. And the tempter came and said to him, “If you are the Son of God, command these stones to become loaves of bread.” But he answered, “It is written,

“‘Man shall not live by bread alone,
but by every word that comes from the mouth of God.’”

Then the devil took him to the holy city and set him on the pinnacle of the temple and said to him, “If you are the Son of God, throw yourself down, for it is written,

“‘He will command his angels concerning you,’

and

“‘On their hands they will bear you up,
lest you strike your foot against a stone.’”

Jesus said to him, “Again it is written, ‘You shall not put the Lord your God to the test.’” Again, the devil took him to a very high mountain and showed him all the kingdoms of the world and their glory. And he said to him, “All these I will give you, if you will fall down and worship me.” Then Jesus said to him, “Be gone, Satan! For it is written,

“‘You shall worship the Lord your God
and him only shall you serve.’”

Then the devil left him, and behold, angels came and were ministering to him.

PRAYER OF THE CHURCH
Last Sunday of the Church Year
Nov. 23, 2025

In peace, let us pray to the Lord: Lord, have mercy.

That we may rejoice in Christ, who displays His kingly reign first from the cross and on whom we wait for the revelation of all that is to come; and that we may enter into our eternal rest by the merits of Christ alone, let us pray to the Lord: Lord, have mercy.

That the Lord may bless this congregation and His whole Church with faithful pastors and church workers who speak without embarrassment or apology the Gospel of Christ crucified and risen; and that we, as hearers of this Gospel, may respond with faith and thanksgiving, let us pray to the Lord: Lord, have mercy.

For all Christian homes, that the Father’s treasured possessions spared through the death of His beloved Son would grow in the fear of the Lord, serve Him faithfully and walk undismayed by the prosperity of the wicked until all is revealed, let us pray to the Lord: Lord, have mercy.

For the inhabitants of the world, that they may stand in awe of Christ, who alone is King of kings and Lord of lords, let us pray to the Lord: Lord, have mercy.

For good government and preservation of life in this fallen world, let us pray to the Lord: Lord, have mercy.

That our true King would return soon for His judgment, which alone can reveal His kingdom and our citizenship, which are not of this world, let us pray to the Lord: Lord, have mercy.

That the Lord would grant healing and peace to all those afflicted in body or mind; and that He would relieve the suffering, give peace to the dying and comfort those who grieve, so that in their need He may be their strength and peace, let us pray to the Lord: Lord, have mercy.

That the Lord would bring us in repentance and faith to receive rightly His Son’s body and blood; that we may manifest the unity of faith and a strong witness before the world; and that our lives may bear the good fruits of His Spirit in holy words and works, let us pray to the Lord: Lord, have mercy.

That the Lord would preserve His people from all temptation and amid all trial, lest they give into the power of evil or despair; and that His people may be bold and faithful witnesses to all those around them, let us pray to the Lord: Lord, have mercy.

O Christ, our King, in Your blood the saints of all ages wash their robes and find entrance to paradise with You. Bring us also with them out of death and the grave and into resurrection and eternal life at the Last Day, when we will see You crowned with glory; for You are the Lamb who was slain and now lives and reigns with the Father and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Amen.

PRAYER OF THE CHURCH
All Saints’ Day (Observed)
Nov. 2, 2025

In peace, let us pray to the Lord: Lord, have mercy.

For all whom God has redeemed through the blood of the Lamb, washing them in the saving water of Baptism and bringing them to faith by the Spirit, that He would keep us in faith and in holy fear, lest we depart from His way and be lost to the eternal future He has prepared for us, let us pray to the Lord: Lord, have mercy.

For the preservation of Matthew, our Synod president; all district presidents; all circuit visitors; and all pastors, that they would bring us the message of salvation, which belongs to our heavenly Father and to the Lamb, let us pray to the Lord: Lord, have mercy.

For our households, that our heavenly Father would bless husbands and wives, parents and children, and those who live alone with the assurance that He knows what we need, let us pray to the Lord: Lord, have mercy.

For wisdom, that Donald, our president; all governors; and all who make, administer and judge our laws would make decisions that are pleasing unto our heavenly Father, who is worthy of all power, might and honor, let us pray to the Lord: Lord, have mercy.

For the sick, the homebound, those who mourn and all the afflicted, that God would give them strength to endure in their suffering and in His compassion keep them in the true faith until the day of final deliverance, health and peace, let us pray to the Lord: Lord, have mercy.

For those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, that in faithfulness they would approach the altar, trust the words of Christ, and receive His body and blood for the sustenance of their bodies and souls, let us pray to the Lord: Lord, have mercy.

In thanksgiving for all the saints who rest from their labors, that the Church on earth would remember them with thanksgiving and joy even as we look forward to seeing them again at the throne of the Lamb, let us pray to the Lord: Lord, have mercy.

For all God’s chosen people whom He has knit together in the one mystical body of His Son, that He would give His whole Church in heaven and on earth His light and peace, let us pray to the Lord: Lord, have mercy.

Standing with those of every tribe and nation before the throne and before the Lamb, we rejoice and cry out: Salvation belongs to our God, who sits on the throne, and to the Lamb. To Him be the glory, with the Father and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Amen.

Words are important, especially the words that Christians use to explain the faith. And while language has its limits, Christ, the very Word of God made flesh, has redeemed even human language. This month's issue of "The Lutheran Witness" considers a variety of common words Christians use — words like "faith," "grace," "worship" and more — and explains the way Lutherans understand these words in light of Scripture and in contrast to the way other church bodies may use these terms. We'll be sharing the definitions from the issue in the coming weeks in anticipation of Reformation Day at the end of the month — won't you share them with your friends and family?

WORSHIP: FROM SCRIPTURE
“The hour is coming, and is now here, when the true worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and truth, for the Father is seeking such people to worship Him.”
