SNJM - Sisters of the Holy Names of Jesus and Mary Learn more about the SNJM at snjm.org. SNJMs serve in the names of Jesus and Mary. Our ministries educate and empower people, especially those most in need.

The Congregation of the Sisters of the Holy Names of Jesus and Mary is an international organization of Catholic women and associates present on three continents. We have been doing this work since our founding in 1843. Even when “glass ceilings” were the norm for women, SNJMs went about founding schools, establishing universities, being spiritual companions, and working for peace and justice. SNJ

Ms collaborate with people who share our Gospel values and our passion for social justice. Such ministries are the core of our work: they express our values in action. Today, we can find worldwide nearly 900 SNJM Sisters. About 600 Associates – women and men –, and other lay persons are sharing our mission, but do not make vows. Provincials:

"Congratulations to the Sisters of the Holy Names of Jesus and Mary (SNJM) of Manitoba on receiving the 2026 Justice James Higgins Award from the Canadian Catholic School Trustees’ Association (CCSTA).

The Justice James Higgins Award is the highest honour presented by the CCSTA and recognizes outstanding contributions to Catholic education in Canada.

Founded in 1843 by Blessed Mother Marie-Rose Durocher, the SNJM arrived in Manitoba in 1874 and assumed responsibility for St. Mary’s Academy. Over the next 150 years, the Sisters became deeply woven into the fabric of Catholic education in Manitoba. They served as teachers, principals, administrators, and educational leaders in schools throughout Winnipeg and surrounding communities. During periods when Catholic schools received no public funding, the Sisters helped sustain and grow Catholic education through faith, perseverance, and sacrifice.

The Sisters also played an important role in broader educational developments in Manitoba, including leadership in French immersion education. Beyond schools, their ministries include religious education, parish pastoral work, outreach to immigrants and refugees, prison ministry, reconciliation initiatives with First Nations communities, and care for the marginalized."
