On December 2nd the London Citadel Band held its annual Festival of Carols at Metropolitan United Church in London, Ontario. It was exciting to share the concert with the Metropolitan Church Choirs under the direction of Dr. Gregg Redner, guest trumpet soloist Paul Stevenson, and the London Citadel Timbrels under the leadership of Serena Fairweather. We were also blessed to have the Salvation Army’s territorial leaders Commissioners Lee and Debbie Graves in attendance and participating in the festivities.

This concert serves as a salute to the city of London for their ongoing faithful support of the Salvation Army in the region. After more than three decades of having this concert at Centennial Hall, just a few blocks away, LCB decided to try Metropolitan United as a new venue for this event. Metropolitan has recently renovated its sanctuary to accommodate local professional and community performance groups as a form of outreach and availability to the arts community of London. We look forward to proclaiming the Christmas story through this partnership for many years to come.

On Sunday December 1st it was the London Citadel Band's pleasure to once again join forces with the Royal Canadian College of Organists to celebrate the 97th annual Lessons and Carols Service at Metropolitan United Church in downtown London. The band always contributes an extended prelude, carol accompaniments and offertory along with the various organists and mass choir that has assembled for this event for almost a century. It's always a wonderful event filled with inspiring scripture, joyful singing and a general feeling of Christmas joy.

It’s official! The London Citadel Band Christmas season has officially begun. After a snowy drive north to Bayfield, Ontario, the band put on a concert of seasonal marches, Christmas arrangements, a timbrel feature and sing-along carols in the historic Bayfield Town Hall. While it is the smallest venue the band ever plays in, LCB has enjoyed this annual event for 30 years with only one snow-out and two years missed due to the pandemic. Snow, music, smiles, sandwiches, and Christmas Joy are all key ingredients to this evening. There was also new young ‘guest conductor’, Caleb Virtue, leading the band as proud father, deputy bandmaster Andrew Virtue, watches from the end chair.

The London Citadel Band held their annual Concert of Faith and Remembrance on November 9th. After a solemn opening with Steve Chard playing Benedictus from The Armed Man (A Mass for Peace) by Karl Jenkins, there was an appropriate observation of Remembrance Day, complete with the Last Post, Reveille, and prayer. In addition to the LCB, concert participants included the London Citadel Songsters and special guest cornet soloist Marcus Venables. His solos included Victory in Jesus (Creamer), Crossroad (Bulla), and I’d Rather Have Jesus (Himes). Other band offerings included Goldcrest (Anderson), Proclamation (Davoren), conducted by deputy bandmaster Andrew Virtue, and Deus Solus (Wainwright). This evening is always meaningful for both band and songsters as it marks the first significant concert of the season, honouring those who gave the ultimate sacrifice and celebrating our faith in God. LCB is now busy preparing for a busy Christmas season ahead. The full concert can be viewed at: https://www.youtube.com/live/V7i-a6Og8fw?feature=shared

In the waning hours of Remembrance Day here in Canada I'm compelled to post a video of LCB's recent performance of Andrew Wainwright's 'Deus Solus' (God Alone). The piece opens with words and music often played at war memorials and cenotaphs across our country and are starkly relevant today:

O God, our help in ages past,
Our hope for years to come,
Our shelter from the stormy blast,
And our eternal Home.

After a brief reference to 'Faithful God' the piece concludes with optimism as we are prompted to ponder our future home in the presence of God through the following words:

God and God alone
Will be the joy of our eternal Home.
He will be our one desire,
Our hearts will never tire
Of God and God alone.

Hey everyone! So sorry that we've been neglecting regular updating of this page. We have to admit it's been a touch sporadic since the pandemic ended. The truth is that the band has actually been very busy since entering 'the new normal' so here's our most recent concert, in case you missed it live or on YouTube. Take some time to enjoy 'Tunes, Talks and Treats' with LCB and flute soloist, Gillian Derer (sorry we can't provide the treats online...they might be stale by now anyway) and we will start updating you on everything that we've been doing in the last year...and a bit... in the coming days. More to come...

It is with profound sadness that we announce that London Citadel Band’s former principal cornetist, Tommy Wilson, was promoted to glory early this morning. Our prayers are with his wife Prema, and children, Graham, Kevin, and Julia as well as his extended family.

Tommy’s service with LCB began when he and his family arrived in Canada in 1975, and spanned several decades. His musical gifts have had eternal impact on those who heard him live, and on so many recordings as a soloist with the band. His lyrical cornet sound was iconic, and sense of musicality stunningly impeccable. His personal gifts were his infectious sense of humour and humble encouragement behind the scenes.

Here is a link to Tommy playing William Himes’ arrangement of I’d Rather Have Jesus. Rest peacefully, Tommy.
