Some grief is made even heavier by distance.

Today, the Aoko family mourns the loss of beloved mother and grandmother, Iyabode Adebayo, who died in Iwo, Nigeria. Because they are unable to travel home for the funeral, we are gathering here — as their church family — to surround them with prayer, compassion, and love.

In moments like these, community matters deeply.

We invite you to join us for a Memorial Eucharist celebrating Iyabode’s life and supporting Ola, Folashade, Ebenezer, and Grace Aoko.

Let us help carry this family through their grief.
No one should mourn alone.

While he waited for his meal today he asked if he could sit at the piano and share and original composition with me. He kindly agreed for me to share it.

On Saturday, May 15, in Iwo Nigeria, Iyabode Adebayo was welcomed home to Jesus. She was mother to Folashade and Mother in Law to Aoko Olakunle. She was grandmother to Ebenezer and Grace Aoko.

The death of a parent is always difficult. All the more so when you are nearly 9,000 kilometres away and unable to return home to grieve alongside family, to embrace loved ones, or to stand at the graveside of someone you love so deeply.

On Saturday, May 23, Iyabode will be laid to rest in Iwo, Nigeria. Though the Aoko family cannot be there in person, they should not have to walk this road of grief alone.

One of the sacred callings of the Church is to gather around those who mourn — to pray with them, to sit with them, to remind them that they are loved, and to bear witness to the hope of the resurrection even in the midst of sorrow.

At St. Paul’s Cathedral, Ola, Folashade, Ebenezer, and Grace are not simply newcomers. They are family. And families gather in moments like these.

With that in mind, we invite the people of St. Paul’s and the wider community to join us for a Memorial Eucharist for Iyabode Adebayo at 4:00 pm on Saturday, May 23 at the Cathedral. Together, we will commend her to God’s eternal care and surround the Aoko family with prayer, love, and support.

May light perpetual shine upon her.
