The Book of Joel is one of the twelve Minor Prophets in the Old Testament of the Bible.
It is traditionally attributed to the prophet Joel, although little is known about him beyond his name.
Main Themes of Joel
A Devastating Locust Plague
Joel begins by describing a catastrophic locust invasion that destroys crops and brings famine.
Some interpreters see this as a literal event, while others view it as a symbol of an invading army.
Call to Repentance
Joel urges the people of Judah to turn back to God with sincere repentance:
"Return to me with all your heart, with fasting and weeping and mourning." (Joel 2:12)
The Day of the Lord
A major theme is the "Day of the Lord," a time when God will judge evil and vindicate His people.
Joel presents it both as a warning and as a source of hope.
God's Restoration
After repentance, God promises to restore what has been lost:
"I will restore to you the years that the locust has eaten." (Joel 2:25)
Outpouring of God's Spirit
Joel contains a famous prophecy:
"I will pour out my Spirit on all people..." (Joel 2:28-29)
This passage is quoted by Peter in the New Testament book of Acts during Pentecost (Acts 2).
Structure of the Book
Chapter 1: The locust plague and its devastation.
Chapter 2: Call to repentance, the Day of the Lord, and God's promise of restoration.
Chapter 3 (Chapter 4 in some traditions): Judgment of the nations and the future blessing of God's people.
Key Message
Joel teaches that God's judgment is real, but His mercy is available to those who repent. The book moves from disaster and warning to restoration, hope, and the promise of God's Spirit.
