We continue our series of reflections with the fourth mansion of The Interior Castle. Here, prayer becomes quieter and more infused by God’s action than human effort. Teresa of Ávila describes a transition from disciplined meditation to recollection and infused contemplation, where the soul experiences peace, sweetness, and interior stillness. The faculties remain partly active, yet God increasingly draws the soul inward. Humility, detachment, and perseverance are essential because consolations can deceive unless grounded in obedience, self-knowledge, and love expressed through living.

This week’s episode of The Heart Sees Further is the third of seven reflections based on Teresa of Avila’s spiritual classic, The Interior Castle. Please “like” and “share” as you enjoy it.

Today, The Heart Sees Further continues with the second in a series of reflections on St Theresa of Avila’s classic devotional book, The Interior Castle.

05/20/2026

This is the first in a series called The Interior Castle. It explores the seven mansions, or stages of spiritual growth toward intimacy with God, described by the 16th century Spanish nun, Teresa of Ávila, in the book from which the title of this series is taken. This reflection introduces Teresa, her work, and the first mansion.

This is The Heart Sees Further's sixth and final reflection in a series called Streams of Grace. Today, we consider the incarnational tradition, sometimes called the sacramental tradition.

Next time, we will begin a new seven part series called "The Interior Castle" based on a spiritual classic with the same title, written by the 16th century Spanish nun, Teresa of Ávila.

This series of six reflections in The Heart Sees Further is focussed on the major movements that have shaped Christian spirituality through the centuries. Some Christians are inclined toward one movement at the expense of another. For example, an advocate for the contemplative movement says to the adherent of the social justice movement, “I see your works but where is your faith?” Meanwhile, the social justice person says to the contemplative, “I see your faith but where are your works?” Today’s reflection on the evangelical tradition is a case in point. It has earned the increasing disdain of many due to perceived narrowness or alignment with particular schools of thought. But, “evangelical” is simply derived from the word “gospel” - εὐαγγέλιον (pronounced euangélion) - and reflects a spirituality rooted in scripture and proclamation.

Throughout its history, some of the Church’s most shining moments have been in those times when Christians have stood against violence and cruelty, in the name of justice inspired by the Prince of Peace. The social justice movement grew out of such compassion and, in today’s reflection, The Heart Sees Further, considers its central place in our spiritual formation.

Today on The Heart Sees Further, we continue with the third in a series called “Streams of Grace: Reflections on Spiritual Formation.” This reflection addresses the Charismatic Tradition, that is, a life empowered by the Holy Spirit.

04/16/2026

In this episode of a series called Streams of Grace, The Heart Sees Further presents a reflection on the Holiness Tradition. This tradition is about ethical Christian life.

04/09/2026

“Streams of Grace: Six Reflections on Spiritual Formation” - Christian spiritual formation has never been shaped by a single path alone. Across the centuries, the Church has returned again and again to practices and convictions that renew its life in seasons of need. For the next six weeks, The Heart Sees Further will explore six enduring traditions within the Christian faith: contemplative prayer, holiness of life, charismatic openness to the Spirit, social justice, evangelical witness, and incarnational living. Each tradition offers a distinct gift, yet none stands alone. Together they form a rich, deeper vision of discipleship - one that calls believers to love God fully, serve others faithfully, and be transformed into the likeness of Christ. In today’s reflection, we explore the prayer-filled life.
