St. Anne's Anglican Church, Byron

St. Anne's Anglican Church, Byron St. Anne's is a lovely stone church built in 1853 by Robert Flint and our story is one that continues today.

A loving Christ-centered community serving God and neighbours through worship and exploration of faith that values inclusivity, the dignity of all persons and the sacredness of God’s creations. We have deep community roots on which the foundation of our church is built. St Anne's Anglican Byron is a part of the Anglican Diocese of Huron, which is a part of the Anglican Church of Canada. We want to

acknowledge that the land we are gathered on today, each of us in our own homes, is First Nations’ territory, the traditional territory of the Anishinaabe, Haudenosaunee, Attawandaron (Neutral), and Wendat peoples. This territory is covered by the Upper Canada Treaties. We also want to offer respect to our neighbouring Indigenous nations, including the Metis, Cree and Inuit amongst many others. Our necessities of life are here and our work today is possible because of the stewardship of the 7 generations who came before us.

A lot happens in this week's Gospel from Matthew where we are reminded that God's grace often appears where we least expect it. Matthew begins his day as a tax collector, unlikely to be considered "disciple material," yet Jesus simply says, "Follow me." Along the way, Jesus also stops to heal a woman who has suffered in silence for twelve years. He also responds to the desperate plea of a grieving father.

Different people, different struggles, yet all are welcomed, seen, and loved by Christ. In a world that often divides people into insiders and outsiders, Jesus reminds us that God's mercy is wider than our expectations. We are invited not only to receive that mercy ourselves, but to extend it to others, remembering that no one is beyond God's call, God's compassion, or God's embrace.

Looking Ahead to Sunday, May 31– Trinity Sunday
Trinity Sunday often leaves preachers searching for words, trying to explain something that really is quite beyond words. The truth is, the Trinity isn’t really a puzzle to solve but a way of pointing toward the fact that God at God’s essence is mystery. Long before anyone used the word “Trinity,” people simply experienced God in different ways: as Creator, in Jesus, and as the Spirit moving among them. So, they found language for this, God, the Father, God the Son, and God the Holy Spirit, not in an attempt to define God in any complete type of way, but rather to describe how God meets us and how we meet God.
At its heart, the idea of the Trinity reminds us that God is all about relationship. That is, God is not distant or still, but alive and moving in love that flows and can be both shared and given. And if that is who God is, then it tells us something about who we are meant to be as well. We are meant to be people drawn into that same life of love, with God, with one another, and with the world. Trinity Sunday invites us not so much to try to pin down this mystery in all of its complexity, but rather to live and thrive within it.
