The First Week of Lent - Caring Hearts

"We've decided we want to change. We want to be happy instead of sad. We want to leave anger and resentment behind and live in peace. What can we do at home, at school and at work to help our hearts grow more caring, more like Gods?"

First Sunday of Lent

"I establish my covenant with you, that never again shall all flesh be cut off by the waters of a flood, and never again shall there be a flood to destroy the earth. God said, This is the sign of the covenant that I make between me and you and every living creature that is with you, for all future g8enerations: I have set my bow in the clouds, and it shall be a sign of the covenant between me and the earth. When I bring clouds over the earth and the bow is seen in the clouds, I will remember my covenant that is between me and you and every living creature of all flesh."

Genesis 9:11 - 14

"A covenant is a promise. The Bible is full of stories about God's promises to love and care for us, promises to be made through people like Noah, Abraham, Moses and, finally, Jesus. Over and over, God promises to care for us, no matter what. Do our hearts care for others, no matter what? Or do we tell our family and friends we won't be nice or help until they're nice to us first?"

"Loving God, you promise to love us always. Help us to care the same way you do: in faithful love that doesn't wait." Amen

"We shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceeds from the mouth of God. Matthew 4:4

Collect for the
First Sunday in Lent

"Almighty God, whose Son fasted forty days in the wilderness, and was tempted as we are but did not sin, give us grace to discipline ourselves in submission to your Spirit, that as you know our weakness, so we may know your power to save; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever." Amen

Second Chances

"After this he went out and saw a tax collector named Levi, sitting at the tax booth; and he said to him, "Follow me." And he got up, left everything and followed him." Luke 5:27 - 28

Don't our hearts leap when, out of the blue, we're given another chance? Just when we think we'll never be able to change, someone says, "I love you" or "I think you're a good person" or "I forgive you, let's start over." When someone says those things to us, it's like Jesus is holding out his hand, inviting us to start over and walk along with him. It's never too late to say, "Yes." It's never too late to offer someone else a second chance, either."

"Jesus, thank you for second chances. Help us leave hurt and sadness behind as we walk and hope with you." Amen

Courage To Change

"Bartimaeus son of Timaeus, a blind beggar, was sitting by the roadside. When he heard that it was Jesus of Nazareth, he began to shout out and say, "Jesus, Son of David, have mercy on me!" Many sternly ordered him to be quiet, but he cried out even more loudly, "Son of David have mercy on me!" Jesus stood still and said, "Call him here." And they called the blind man, saying to him, "Take heart; get up, he is calling you." So throwing off his cloak, he sprang up and came to Jesus. Then Jesus said to him, "What do you want me to do for you?" The blind man said to him, "My teacher, let me see again." Jesus said to him "Go; your faith has made you well." Mark 10:46 - 52

"Maybe we are not blind, like Bartimaeus was. Maybe were angry or jealous or scared. Those aren't feelings we want to carry in our hearts day after day, as we go to sleep at night and wake up in the morning. Jesus knows we want to change. He asks Bartimaeus and he asks us what we want him to do for us. Sometimes it takes courage to answer honestly. What do we want Jesus to heal in our hearts today?"

"Jesus, we know our weaknesses. We know the ways we are blind to your love. Master, help us to see." Amen

Let us make a good beginning as we enter our Lenten Journey. I will be sharing with you scripture selections and a Lenten devotion from the work of Amy Welborn entitled "Hearts Renewed".

"Create in me a clean heart, O God, and put a new and right spirit within me. Restore to me the joy of your salvation, and sustain in me a willing spirit. O Lord, open my lips, and my mouth will declare your praise."
Psalm 51:10, 15

"When we do something wrong, we can feel ashamed and discouraged. Sometimes we even think we can never be good again. That's just not true. Today is the first day of Lent. It's a good day to think of something we've done that's made us feel like we want to hide from You or our family and friends. By being brave and telling You about our sins and bad habits, we begin to be happy and joyful again."

"Loving God, thank you for our lives. We make mistakes sometimes, but we all want to do good and be more like You. Help us to let You into our hearts to make our hearts clean and happy once again." Amen

"This is my beloved Son, with whom I am well pleased; listen to him." Matthew 17.5

Collect for the Transfiguration of the Lord

"Almighty God, on the holy mount you revealed to chosen witnesses your well-beloved Son, wonderfully transfigured: mercifully deliver us from the darkness of this world, and change us into his likeness from glory to glory; through Jesus Christ our Lord who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit,
one God, now and for ever." Amen

Let's Talk Day 5

Psalm 62: 1-2, 5-8

"For God alone my soul waits in silence, from him comes my salvation. He alone is my rock and my salvation, my fortress, I shall never be shaken. For God alone my soul waits in silence, for my hope is from him. He alone is my rock and my salvation, my fortress; I shall not be shaken . On God rests my deliverance and my honour; my mighty rock, my refuge is in God. Trust in him at all times, O people; pour out your heart before him; God is refuge for us."

"Lord God you are the source of our hope, honour, and salvation. We pour out our hearts to you In this difficult time and ask that you keep us firm in the knowledge that you are our refuge." Amen (PFH Pg. 93)

Let's Talk Day 4

"Blessed Jesus, in the comfort of your love, we come before you In our time of distress . Help us to find calm in your constant presence and peace in your unfailing promises. Touch us, O Lord, and fill us with your light, for you are our hope and our salvation." (ELWPC Pg. 198)

01/31/2021

"Jesus went about Galilee, teaching, preaching, and healing every disease. See Matthew 4.23

Collect for the
4th Sunday of Epiphany

"Living God, in Christ you make all things new. Transform the poverty of our nature by the riches of your grace, and in the renewal of our lives make known your glory; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who is alive and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever." Amen (BAS)

Day 3

Psalm 27 : 1-5, 7-10, 13-14

"The Lord is my light and my salvation ; whom shall I fear? The Lord is the stronghold of my life; of whom shall I be afraid ? When evildoers assail me to devour my flesh... my adversaries and foes... they shall stumble and fall. Though an army encamp against me, my heart shall not fear; though war rise up against me, yet I will be confident. One thing I have asked of the Lord, that will I seek after ; To live in the house of the Lord all the days of my life , to behold the beauty of the Lord, and to inquire in his temple. For he will hide me in his shelter in the day of trouble ; he will conceal me under the cover of his tent; he will set me high on a rock. Hear, O Lord, when I cry aloud, be gracious to me and answer me! "Come", my heart says, "Seek his face!" Your face, Lord, do I seek . Do not hide your face from me. Do not turn your servant away in anger, you who have been my help. Do not cast me off, do not forsake me, o God of my salvation! If my father and mother forsake me, the Lord will take me up. I believe that I shall see the goodness of the Lord in the land of the living. Wait for the Lord; be strong and let your heart take courage; wait for the Lord!"

"Lord , when depression, like an enemy army, seems to eat at our strength and body and mind, help us to be confident in the truth that you are the stronghold of life. Shelter us in these difficult days. Be gracious to us and hear our prayers ; Do not forsake us . Give us courage and strength to wait for you." Amen (PFH Pg. 88)
