ASCENSION DAY

Appointed Readings
Acts 1:1–11
Psalm 47 or Psalm 93
Ephesians 1:15–23
Luke 24:44–53

Collect of the Day
Almighty God, whose only-begotten Son our Lord Jesus Christ ascended into heaven: May our hearts and minds also there ascend, and with him continually dwell; who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.

Thoughts
Ascension Day marks the triumphant return of Jesus to the right hand of the Father—a moment not of absence, but of enthronement. The earthly ministry of Christ concludes, not with a fading into history, but with a coronation in glory. In Acts, we read of Jesus being lifted up before the disciples' eyes, a visible testimony that the risen Lord now reigns as King.

In Ephesians, Paul prays that we may grasp this staggering truth: Jesus is far above all rule and authority, and God has placed all things under His feet. Yet, astonishingly, Paul says that Christ's exaltation is for the Church, which is His body. His rule is not distant; it is for our benefit, for our sanctification, for our mission.
Luke’s Gospel reminds us that Jesus ascended with hands lifted in blessing, and the disciples returned to Jerusalem with great joy. Why joy? Because the story is not over. The same Jesus who ascended will come again. The Ascension is not a farewell—it’s a promise.

Challenge
How does the Ascension shape our daily lives? It means we live under the reign of a risen King. It means the throne of heaven is not empty but occupied by One who intercedes for us. Let us live as those who are not alone, but governed, guided, and graced by the enthroned Christ. Lift up your heart—your King reigns!

Response Prayer
Lord Jesus Christ, ascended in glory and reigning in majesty, lift our hearts to where You are. Help us to live in the power of Your victory, walk in the light of Your presence, and wait in hope for Your return. May we live each day with eyes fixed on heaven, and lives grounded in Your love. Amen.

Pour your grace into our hearts, O Lord, that we who have known the incarnation of your Son Jesus Christ, announced by an angel to the Virgin Mary, may by his cross and passion be brought to the glory of his resurrection; who lives and reigns with you, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen.

The Annunciation marks the moment when the Angel Gabriel brought God’s message to Mary: that she would conceive and bear the Son of God. Mary’s humble response, "Behold, I am the servant of the Lord; let it be to me according to your word," exemplifies complete trust and obedience.

The appointed readings invite us to reflect on God’s unfolding plan of salvation. Isaiah prophesies the coming of Immanuel, the Psalm celebrates the royal bride, and Romans speaks of the grace brought through Christ, countering Adam’s fall. Luke's Gospel recounts the angel's visit, highlighting Mary's faith and God's extraordinary invitation to humanity through her.

As we reflect on the Annunciation, consider your own response to God’s call. Are you ready to say, "Let it be to me according to your word"? Do you trust God's plan, even when it leads into the unknown?

𝗥𝗲𝘀𝗽𝗼𝗻𝘀𝗲 𝗣𝗿𝗮𝘆𝗲𝗿
Heavenly Father, you sent your angel to announce the coming of your Son, and in Mary, we see a heart surrendered to your will. Grant us the grace to trust you as she did. May our lives proclaim your glory, and may we, like Mary, bear Christ into the world through our words and actions. Amen.
