O God, of unspeakable mercy, who didst give the blessed Saint Edmund grace to overcome the enemy by dying for thy Name: mercifully grant to us thy servants; that by his intercession we may be found worthy to conquer and subdue the temptations of our ancient adversary; through Jesus Christ thy Son our Lord, who liveth and reigneth with thee, in the unity of the Holy Ghost, ever one God, world without end. Amen.

Behold the Lamb of God which takest away the sin of the world. He was wounded for our transgressions: he was bruised for our iniquities. The chastisement of our peace was upon him and with his stripes we are healed. Herin is love, not that we loved God, but that he loved us: and sent his Son to be the propitiation for our sins. Worthy is the Lamb that was slain to receive power, and riches, and wisdom, and strength: and honour, and glory, and blessing!

O GOD, who, by the providence of thine abundant bounty, didst adorn thy Church with the merits of the wondrous life of blessed Edmund, thy Confessor and Bishop, and gladdened her with his glorious miracles: mercifully grant to us thy servants; that by his example we may learn to amend our lives, and by his intercession be defended against all adversities; through Jesus Christ thy Son our Lord, who liveth and reigneth with thee, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, ever one God, world without end. Amen

"Then best wood spoke these words:
“It was long since – I yet remember it –
that I was hewn at holt’s end,
moved from my stem. Strong fiends seized me there,
worked me for spectacle; cursèd ones lifted me .
On shoulders men bore me there, then fixed me on hill;
fiends enough fastened me. Then saw I mankind’s Lord
come with great courage when he would mount on me.
Then dared I not against the Lord’s word
bend or break, when I saw earth’s
fields shake. All fiends
I could have felled, but I stood fast.
The young hero stripped himself – he, God Almighty –
strong and stout-minded. He mounted high gallows,
bold before many, when he would loose mankind.
I shook when that Man clasped me. I dared, still, not bow to earth,
fall to earth’s fields, but had to stand fast.
Rood was I reared. I lifted a mighty King,
Lord of the heavens, dared not to bend.
With dark nails they drove me through: on me those sores are seen,
open malice-wounds. I dared not scathe anyone.
They mocked us both, we two together. All wet with blood I was,
poured out from that Man’s side, after ghost he gave up....
Co**se grew cold,
fair life-dwelling. Then someone felled us
all to the earth. That was a dreadful fate!
Deep in a pit one delved us. Yet there Lord’s thanes,
friends, learned of me,. . . . . . . . . . .
adorned me with silver and gold.
Now you may know, loved man of mine,
what I, work of baleful ones, have endured
of sore sorrows. Now has the time come
when they will honor me far and wide,
men over earth, and all this great creation,
will pray for themselves to this beacon. On me God’s son
suffered awhile. Therefore I, glorious now,
rise under heaven, and I may heal
any of those who will reverence me.
Once I became hardest of torments,
most loathly to men, before I for them,
voice-bearers, life’s right way opened.
Indeed, Glory’s Prince, Heaven’s Protector,
honored me, then, over holm-wood"-Dream of the Rood

"GRANT, we beseech thee, Almighty God: that like as we do believe thy Only Begotten Son our Lord Jesus Christ to have ascended into the heavens; so we may also in heart and mind thither ascend, and with him continually dwell; who liveth and reigneth with thee, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, ever one God, world without end. Amen."

Alleluia!

Christ our Passover has been sacrificed for us;
therefore let us keep the feast,
Not with the old leaven, the leaven of malice and evil,
but with the unleavened bread of sincerity and truth. Alleluia.

Christ being raised from the dead will never die again;
death no longer has dominion over him.
The death that he died, he died to sin, once for all;
but the life he lives, he lives to God.
So also consider yourselves dead to sin,
and alive to God in Jesus Christ our Lord. Alleluia.

Christ has been raised from the dead, the first fruits of those who have fallen asleep.
For since by a man came death,
by a man has come also the resurrection of the dead.
For as in Adam all die,
so also in Christ shall all be made alive.

Alleluia!

Holy Saturday is the day on which we remember the "Harrowing of Hell." Harrowing being a Middle English word meaning "turning over" denoting Christ's conquering of that realm. This day commemorates Christ's decent into Hell mentioned in the Creed, where He entered the Limbo of the Patriarchs in order to bring out all of the righteous people from the Old Testament.

"ADAM:
Ah, Jesus, Lord, much is your might.
Yet you humble yourself in this way here,
To help us all, as you said that night
When we transgressed, I and my peer.
Here we have lived without any light
Four thousand and six hundred year.
Now I see, by this solemn sight,
How your mercy has made us clear."

JESUS:
Adam, and my friends all here,
From all your foes come forth, with me.
You shall be set in solace and cheer
Where you shall never sorrows see.
And Michael, my own angel clear,
Receive these souls all unto thee
And lead them now as you shall hear:
To Paradise, with joy and glee.
To my grave, return I will,
To rise up from the dead;
And thus I shall fulfill
All things that I have said"-The Saddlers' Play: The Harrowing of Hell
