Second Advent/Segundo domingo del Adviento

“Don’t be afraid; God is up to something special!’’

This week we take this message to heart, that God is truly ‘up to something special’ in and around even us, even here and even now, in the name of the child who is born a king.

¡Bienvenidos todos y todas!

Join us at 10 am on Sunday for worship via zoom or in the sanctuary.

‘Joseph, son of David: Do not be afraid…’

Advent begins with trust (confianza). More specifically, and according to the Gospel of Matthew, it begins with an act of complete and utter confidence by which Joseph, on discovering that his world has been turned upside down, trusts in God’s design.

With Joseph this week, we turn ourselves toward this trust, that God truly holds all things, and that because God truly holds all things, we also need not be afraid.

Blessings to you / Bendiciones.

This is a liminal time in the life of the church; we are coming out of the pandemic, but we aren’t yet fully out. We are between what came before, and what is yet to come. We know that some things are ending, but we don’t yet know what will begin. In the midst of this, we may be wondering why we do this thing called “church”. This liminal space is fertile ground for the Holy Spirit. We are invited to engage this space and time from a spiritual perspective. As we stand on the threshold between the past and the future, we are invited into 3 spiritual postures: letting go of our agenda; abiding in Christ; and embracing God’s invitation.

The connection between Ecclesiastes 9 and Luke 14 is not immediately obvious. We will reflect on a call to give up the hero’s journey (think of any Disney movie where a hero follows their call, does great things, and saves the world) for discipleship. Ecclesiastes calls us not to grand plans, but to turning our hand to the work that comes to us. Jesus in Luke calls us to abandon everything for the sake of the being his disciple. Might this include our own dreams for the congregation’s future so that we can enter God’s dream?

Let’s be part of God’s Solution/Seamos parte de la solución de Dios

In the story of Moses’ call (in Exodus 3&4), of the five times that Moses questions God’s call to serve, only once does God get upset: when Moses refuses to act. If you see a need, God is probably calling you to act, to be part of the solution. God does not do it for us; God acts through us!

Scriptures then… for us now

Jesus’ response to the discouraged disciples on the road to Emmaus was to remind them of the scriptural Story which was very much alive and relevant, recent events notwithstanding. They ‘had hoped…,’ the story goes, and Jesus gives them new hope by reminding them of the way in which the Good News impinges on and gives new meaning to their reality. Over the next five weeks, we plan to follow suit, exploring the word of scripture for us today. We hope you’ll join us, by zoom or in person, and trust that our hearts will also burn within us as we explore together!

Greetings! Saludos a todos!
Consider the birds, says Jesus; It is an invitation to slow down, to see what we usually don’t see. There are things we see when we are walking out in the wide world that we don’t notice when we are worried or preoccupied. There is a natural attentiveness that comes when we slow the pace of our walk and our life: especially if our heads are up, and not down on a smartphone.

Consider the birds, says Jesus; and we think of the birds of the air—the darting sparrow, the diving osprey, the dove or the meadow lark or the warbler. Interesting, then, that of all the birds with which he might have identified, Jesus picked the chicken:
