We often imagine that true freedom comes from having our own way, but doing what we want often leads us to a different kind of life than the one we want. In the next section of Peter, the apostle explains how true freedom is found in submission to God's will, even though that sometimes means being treated unjustly, but it teaches us to be like Jesus, who gives us the pattern for what it means to be truly human.
